Apparently the buzzards weren’t the only ones wanting their moment in front of the camera! 😂📸

This gull dropped in during my session at Otterbourne Hide & Studios and clearly decided it wanted to be part of the photoshoot too. It even gave me a few poses before making a rather dramatic exit! 🪽

Not quite the bird I’d gone there to photograph… but when a model volunteers, you don’t say no! 😂

A few more shots from an incredible afternoon with the buzzards. 🦅📸

I honestly don’t think I’ll ever get tired of photographing these birds. The detail in their feathers, those piercing eyes and the sheer presence they have when you see them up close is something else.

These were taken during my session at the Buzzard & Fox Hide at Otterbourne Hide & Studios, and it was one of those days where everything seemed to come together. Plenty more buzzard photos still to come! 😍🦅

These have to be some of the best photos I’ve ever taken of a buzzard. 🦅📸

Taken during my visit to the Buzzard & Fox Hide at Otterbourne Hide & Studios, I was lucky enough to get incredibly close views of this beautiful bird.

Being able to capture all those little details — the eyes, hooked beak, feathers and some brilliant expressions — made the whole session for me. That second shot especially looks like it had something to say! 😂

Definitely a set I’m proud to have in my wildlife photography collection. ❤️🦅

A couple of months ago I booked the Buzzard & Fox Hide at Otterbourne Hide & Studios, and what an experience it was! 📸🦅

The buzzards came sweeping in for the bait, giving me some incredible opportunities to photograph them coming into land with those huge wings spread. I managed to come away with some shots I’m really pleased with.

Absolutely stunning birds and a brilliant day behind the camera! 🙌

Sealed with a view 🦭🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A couple of beautiful seals I photographed a few months ago while out on a Scottish Seabird boat trip. There’s something special about seeing these guys relaxing on the rocks in their natural habitat, surrounded by the wild Scottish coastline.

That second seal definitely knew how to pose for the camera! 😂📸

🖤 The unmistakable call of the raven…

Another photograph from one of my visits to Portland — this time, one of the incredible ravens I spotted while exploring the area. 📸🖤

There’s something about seeing a raven flying around those rugged cliffs that just seems right. Big, powerful and incredibly intelligent, they’re one of my favourite birds to stop and watch.

🖤 A few raven facts:

🐦 Ravens are the largest members of the crow family found in the UK, noticeably bigger and heavier than carrion crows.

♦️ In flight, look for their distinctive diamond-shaped or wedge-shaped tail, which is a useful way of separating them from crows.

🧠 Ravens are exceptionally intelligent birds. They’re capable of problem-solving, learning and remembering information, and they have a fascinating range of social behaviours.

🗣️ Their deep, croaking “kronk-kronk” call is often one of the first clues that there’s a raven nearby.

🌬️ They’re fantastic aerial performers too, using rising air around cliffs and hills to soar, tumble and even roll through the sky.

❤️ Ravens also form strong pair bonds, with established pairs often remaining together for many years.

Another brilliant encounter from Portland — and definitely a bird with plenty of character. 🖤📸

Black feathers, wild cliffs and that unmistakable call… you always know when a raven is around.

🌊 A master of the sea breeze… 📸

Going back through some photographs from one of my visits to Portland a few months ago, and I had to share this one — a beautiful fulmar cruising along the coast. 🪽🌊

At first glance you could easily mistake one for a gull, but fulmars are actually very different birds — and they’re perfectly designed for a life spent over the open sea.

🌊 A few fulmar facts:

🪽 Fulmars belong to the same group of seabirds as petrels and shearwaters, rather than gulls.

👃 Look closely at the bill and you’ll notice their distinctive tubular nostrils. Fulmars have an excellent sense of smell, which helps them locate food out at sea.

🌬️ They’re fantastic gliders and can use the wind above the waves and around sea cliffs to travel with surprisingly little wing-flapping.

🏔️ Fulmars nest on coastal cliffs, laying just one egg during the breeding season.

🤢 And they have one particularly memorable defence! If threatened, fulmars — especially youngsters — can spit a foul-smelling, oily stomach substance at an attacker. Definitely best photographed from a respectful distance! 😂

📸 Watching them glide effortlessly past the cliffs at Portland was brilliant — another one of those photographs that brings back memories of a great day on the coast.

Built for the wind, waves and wild places. 🌊🪽❤️

Sometimes the best view is directly above you… 📸

One of those moments when you look up at exactly the right time — a magnificent Red Kite flying straight over my head! ❤️

Seeing one soaring in the distance is impressive enough, but when a bird this big passes directly overhead, you really get to appreciate that incredible wingspan and distinctive forked tail.

Naturally, the camera came straight up! 😂📸

🪶 A few Red Kite facts:

🪽 Red Kites have a wingspan of around 1.5–1.7 metres, yet they can look almost effortless as they soar overhead.

🔱 Their deeply forked tail is one of their most recognisable features. Watch closely and you’ll see them constantly twisting it to steer while soaring.

👀 Red Kites have excellent eyesight and spend lots of time scanning the ground below for food.

🍽️ Although they’re birds of prey, Red Kites are also great scavengers and will readily feed on carrion.

🇬🇧 They have one of Britain’s great conservation success stories. After disappearing from most of the UK, protection and reintroduction programmes helped them make an incredible comeback.

❤️ And when the sunlight catches that beautiful reddish-brown plumage as one passes overhead… it’s very difficult not to take another photograph!

Eyes to the sky — you never know what might be looking back down at you. 🦅📸

😂 Does anyone else find this ALWAYS happens with wildlife photography?

You spend weeks and weeks searching for a particular bird…

You hear it. 👂
You glimpse it disappearing into a bush. 👀
You nearly get the shot. 📸
Then it vanishes. 😂

And finally… SUCCESS! You get the photograph you’ve been waiting for. 🙌🐦

Then what happens?

YOU SEE THEM EVERYWHERE. 😂😂

So, yes… here we are again with another Greater Whitethroat, photographed on Salisbury Plain Training Area. 📸

Not that I’m complaining — after making me work so hard for that first photograph, I’ll happily photograph these brilliant little birds every time they decide to show themselves!

🌿 Greater Whitethroats love scrub, brambles and hedgerows, which is why they can be frustratingly good at disappearing just when you get the camera ready.

🌍 They’re summer visitors to the UK, making the long migration from Africa each year to breed.

🎶 And quite often you’ll hear that scratchy song before you actually see the bird.

Wildlife photography summed up perfectly:

Weeks trying to find one… then you can’t stop finding them. Typical! 😂📸🐦

🐛 Dinner is served! 🐦📸

A Greater Whitethroat photographed with a caterpillar firmly clamped in its beak — a brilliant little moment to catch on camera.

During the breeding season, these energetic little warblers spend a huge amount of time searching through bushes, brambles and vegetation for insects and other invertebrates. A bird carrying food like this may well be on its way to feed hungry youngsters nearby. ❤️

🐦 A few Greater Whitethroat facts:

🐛 Caterpillars and other insects form an important part of their diet, particularly during the breeding season when there are growing chicks to feed.

🌿 Greater Whitethroats love scrub, hedgerows, brambles and patches of dense vegetation — often making them much easier to hear than photograph!

🌍 They’re long-distance migrants, arriving in the UK in spring after spending the winter in Africa south of the Sahara.

🎶 Male Greater Whitethroats have a distinctive scratchy song and can sometimes be seen performing short song flights above their territory.

🪶 Their name comes from that distinctive pale white throat, particularly noticeable on the male.

After spending so much time trying to photograph these little birds, catching one with a caterpillar in its beak made the moment even better. 📸❤️

One caterpillar… and possibly one very hungry youngster waiting nearby! 🐛🐦
