A friend asked us to photograph her daughter's first professional headshots for acting auditions, and it turned into one of our favourite sessions this year.

We covered two different looks, a classic theatrical shot and a warmer, more commercial smile, worked through the angles casting directors actually look for, and kept the retouching light enough that she still looks like herself.

Her dad left us this afterwards: "His calm, professional manner immediately put our daughter at ease... The finished photos were first class, exactly what we were hoping for."

Not all views are created equal 😍

In London this morning for a corporate headshot shoot, in an office with the Thames on one side and St Paul's Cathedral on the other. Doesn't get much better than this for an office view!

This is me setting up lights and camera before the client arrived. Some serious "office envy" happening here.

Gone with the wind – Gaffer tape saves the day

Woops!

Yesterday I was on an outdoor shoot, a group photo of a five-piece ensemble, and I'd brought the heavy-duty stands and sandbags to keep everything steady in the wind.

I set up early to grab a test shot before the group arrived. Camera locked in, exposure dialled, two large umbrellas either side of the camera to soften the light. There'd been a few gusty moments already, so I checked the sandbags, raised the umbrellas to about seven feet, and put the camera on a 10-second timer so I could stand on my mark and check the shot.

Two seconds after I got into position, a gust caught the left umbrella (seven feet up, 105cm wide) like a sail. I watched it lean back in slow motion and knew straight away it wasn't recovering. I sprinted to save it. Turns out I'm no Usain Bolt. It hit the tarmac with a sickening thud just before I got there.

Quick inspection: the flash is still working, but the main rod is bent at a rather jaunty angle. Easy fix, I thought, and gently eased it back straight.

Snap. It broke clean off in my hand and the umbrella folded up.

Musicians arriving in minutes. Me on the ground with a dead umbrella and no plan.

Then I remembered the roll of gaffer tape in my car, which I never usually carry but had thrown in that morning on a hunch. I got to work. It wasn't pretty; it was wobbly as hell and looked like Frankenstein's monster, but it held.

The shoot went ahead. The client never knew a thing, and we came away with some brilliant images.

Lessons learned: heavier sandbags (two more just ordered), always carry a spare umbrella, and never leave home without gaffer tape.

Above all, don't panic. Think on your feet, and a solution always turns up.

Sport moves fast, and the best shots happen in a split second you don't get a second go at.

Over the years, that's meant photographing elite triathletes in Hyde Park and Leeds, mud and mayhem at obstacle races across Hertfordshire, the hammer throw at Harpenden Highland Gathering, yachts heeling hard off Cowes, and vintage race cars at Goodwood Revival.

Nice and cool inside the Cosy Club.

Back at the Cosy Club this morning in the centre of St Albans for another Business Buzz networking event.

Warm walk in, 27 degrees and not a cloud to hide behind, so I was glad to get into the air-con and cool off before the networking started. Racked up 15K steps on the round trip, so at least my watch is happy.

Two hours of conversations disappeared fast. Caught up with Jeni Peacock, Julian Priestley - Creative Wizard and Vignas Gunasegaran, CFA FPFS, and got talking to Janine O'Connor and Jeff Craft about Virtual PAs and web design. That's the bit I like about these mornings, you never know which five-minute chat is going to turn into something useful.

Is it a bird, is it a plane, is it a Haggis? No. It’s a large heavy stone being thrown at the Harpenden Lions Club Highland Gathering at the weekend 🌞🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Fantastic day out taking pictures of the competitors in the Highland Games.

Pipe bands, caber toss, haggis hurling, ferret races, the lot.

What a scorcher for the Harpenden Lions Club Highland Gathering this weekend! A great Scottish-themed family day out and charity fundraiser at Rothamsted Park.

Big respect to the Sealed Knot re-enactors, decked out in full 1640s Civil War gear (thick trousers, armour, helmets) in that heat, and to the Highland Games athletes battling it out on an open field with no shade in sight.

The standout moment for me was the Sealed Knot's re-enactment of a Civil War skirmish, Cavaliers versus Roundheads. Musketeers, pikemen and drummers moving in proper tactical formation, with black powder guns firing and swords clashing. You could see how much fun the performers were having, and the crowd loved every second.

Add in pipe bands, Highland dancing, caber toss, stone put, haggis hurling, kids' races, archery, go-karts, ferret races and market stalls, and it was a brilliant day all round.

Second time at the St Albans District Chamber of Commerce Coffee Break this morning, held at the beautiful St Albans Museum + Gallery.

Last time I turned up like I'd swum there, thanks to a downpour. This time, bone dry, just a bit warm from all this sunshine we're having (heatwave two or three now, who's counting). Coffee, water, big open windows and a few fans kept the Assembly Room comfortable.

Great hour of chatting with familiar faces and new ones, met an AI governance expert, a menopause coach, a mental health practitioner, another coach and mentor, a couple of marketers, and a data analyst. Time flew by, and I was still mid-chat when the hour was up; luckily, nobody kicked us out.

Brilliant way to start a Tuesday.

What a day to be in St Albans 📷

I had the pleasure of photographing Alban Day on Saturday and it was everything I hoped it would be.

If you've not come across it before, Alban Day celebrates Saint Alban, Britain's very first saint. He was a Romano-British citizen who sheltered a Christian priest when Christianity was still forbidden, was arrested in his place and executed on the hill where the Cathedral now stands. The day brings his story to life through a procession with 12-foot carnival puppets weaving through the city, joined by clergy, Roman soldiers, community groups and a brilliant crowd of supporters.

I followed the procession from St Peter's Church all the way through the High Street to the Cathedral. With the market on at the same time, the whole city centre was buzzing. Warm day, a little overcast, which honestly made for great light to shoot in.

Some of my favourite moments from the day are in the gallery below. The laughter between the clergy, the Roman soldiers in full chainmail, the children taking their legionary roles very seriously indeed, and those incredible giant puppets up close.

St Albans never disappoints. 🏙️
