What a night. 🎭

Last night we were lucky enough to attend the VIP Launch Event for the OVO Roman Theatre Open Air Festival 2026, and wow, what a way to kick off the summer.

We were there for the opening production, Sherlock Holmes. A madcap, high-energy romp through Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic stories, with Holmes, Watson, and Mrs Hudson bringing the whole thing brilliantly to life. Brilliant fun from start to finish.

The weather had other ideas for most of the day. It absolutely hammered it down, and yes, the ponchos and blankets were very much in the bag. But about an hour before the show the rain eased, and by 7.30pm there was even a sliver of sun breaking through. The weather gods delivered.

And the venue. Honestly. The Roman Theatre of Verulamium, just west of St Albans, was built around AD 140 and is the only Roman theatre of its kind still visible in Britain. It seated around 2,000 spectators in its day. Sitting there as the light faded, watching live theatre on the same ground where Romans once gathered almost 2,000 years ago, is a feeling that's hard to put into words.

I've lived in St Albans for 24 years and somehow never made it here before last night. As a great actor once said… I'll be back. 😄

If you haven't been, go. The festival runs until the end of August and there's loads on.

If you've ever organised a corporate event and wished you had better images to show for it – this one's for you.

A new blog post covers what good event photography actually looks like. How to plan it, what to ask for, and why the images from a well-photographed conference or keynote session keep paying off long after the day is done.

I've photographed Olympic gold medallists, broadcasters, CEOs and business authors at events across London. The link is below – take a look and get in touch if you've got something coming up.

It was a super project to work on. Thank you for the opportunity to photograph such a great city.

Soggy bottom networking! 😄

I turned up to yesterday's St Albans Chamber of Commerce event with wet shoes, damp trousers, and very sad socks. The weather had other ideas about my optimistic break for freedom from the house – top half was fine, bottom half... not so much.

Undeterred, I got stuck in anyway. And honestly? It was brilliant.

The event has a new home – St Albans Museum & Gallery in the gorgeous restored Georgian Town Hall on St Peter's Street. Three floors of history, an original courtroom and cells you can actually walk through, and a great cafe. If you haven't visited yet, go.

Great turnout despite the rain. Good conversations, familiar faces, and plenty of new ones. Worth every soggy step.

Testimonial Tuesday! 🙌

This one means a lot. The ABC Fencing shoot was a proper muddy, rainy, roll-your-sleeves-up kind of day – and the results speak for themselves.

"The images have made all the difference and really make ABC Fencing look like a very professional outfit."

That's exactly what great business photography should do. Make you look as good as you actually are.

Huge thanks to Jeni Peacock at UpStream Marketing and the ABC Fencing team.

I've just finished a big photography commission for St Albans City Centre BID, and this shot says it all.

257 images across five sessions, covering everything from the flower containers on the high street to the murals near Drovers Way, the blue plaque banners, the museum benches, and the evening festoon lights on George Street and French Row.

The brief was to capture St Albans at its best: busy, welcoming, and worth visiting. I think we got there.

The images will be used in the BID's Ballot submission this October, when businesses across the city vote on whether to renew the BID's mandate for another five years. Professional photography plays a bigger role in that process than most people realise.

Read the full story behind the commission on the blog, on my website.

Advantage: sunburn ☀️

Yesterday I was at Greenwood Park Lawn Tennis Club in St Albans shooting personal branding images for a local tennis coach – action shots, movement, personality. The kind of images you can actually build a marketing presence around.

The session was booked for an hour. We ran to two and a half. 32 degrees, no cloud, no shade, sun almost directly overhead. I remembered the hat, the water bottle, and the suncream.

Forgot the back of my neck. Lesson learned.

Once the edit's done, I'll share the final results. Watch this space. 🎾

So good to be back at Business Buzz yesterday! 🙌

It's been a few months since diary clashes got in the way, but I finally made it back, and at a brilliant new venue too. The Cosy Club in St Albans is a lovely spot, beautifully decorated with loads of room to chat.

The mix of people in the room was brilliant. Accountants, coaches, web designers, IT, HR, AI automation specialists, and even an aerospace livery company, you really do meet everyone at these things.

Two hours flew by. Great conversations, new connections made, and the coffee was excellent. What more do you need on a Thursday morning? ☕

If you were there yesterday, it was great to meet you. See you next month!

Here are the images from that bluebell morning I shared the video of earlier this week.

I'm really happy with how these have come out. The light was doing something special that morning, the way it was cutting through the trees and catching the flowers was exactly what I'd hoped for when I planned the shoot.

Bluebells only last a few weeks. Getting out at the right time, in the right light, makes all the difference. These were taken just a couple of miles from home at Heartwood Forest near St Albans.

Gone for another year now, but I know exactly where I'll be standing next May.

Testimonial Tuesday!

I’m always grateful when clients take the time to share their feedback – it’s one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

“Working with Mike was always a delight. He is a consummate professional with an incredible eye for detail. Both Mike’s corporate projects and private commissions are of an exemplary standard.”

Huge thanks to Marcia E Griffiths for these kind words. It’s been a real pleasure working together on such a variety of creative projects over the years.
