What a night. 🎭
Last night we were lucky enough to attend the VIP Launch Event for the OVO Roman Theatre Open Air Festival 2026, and wow, what a way to kick off the summer.
We were there for the opening production, Sherlock Holmes. A madcap, high-energy romp through Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic stories, with Holmes, Watson, and Mrs Hudson bringing the whole thing brilliantly to life. Brilliant fun from start to finish.
The weather had other ideas for most of the day. It absolutely hammered it down, and yes, the ponchos and blankets were very much in the bag. But about an hour before the show the rain eased, and by 7.30pm there was even a sliver of sun breaking through. The weather gods delivered.
And the venue. Honestly. The Roman Theatre of Verulamium, just west of St Albans, was built around AD 140 and is the only Roman theatre of its kind still visible in Britain. It seated around 2,000 spectators in its day. Sitting there as the light faded, watching live theatre on the same ground where Romans once gathered almost 2,000 years ago, is a feeling that's hard to put into words.
I've lived in St Albans for 24 years and somehow never made it here before last night. As a great actor once said… I'll be back. 😄
If you haven't been, go. The festival runs until the end of August and there's loads on.
