My first sighting of this year's cygnets on my usual stretch. I didn't find their nest this year, the first time I haven't watched Mrs 54F brooding her eggs. I believe five hatched originally, but only three remain now.

Jim almost fledging this afternoon (in truth, more like falling off similar to his brother!), and Pip tucked away on part of the castellations under the platform.

An hour or so watching the platform this morning. After watching the YouTube feed, I was convinced the larger of the two chicks was about to take the leap into the unknown, but it didn't happen. However, on closer inspection of some of the shots, it would appear that the first ready to fledge is the smaller of the two recorded (3TL) when ringed, which baffles me somewhat, as it is clearly shedding it's down feathers first. Is it possibly a female?? 3SL was the larger of the two when ringed.

Edit. I've been told now that they were recorded incorrectly, so they are both males and 3TL was the first to hatch.

Back to the river today hoping for a few visits. I hadn't even finished putting up my hide before Queenie touched down, then had a juvenile in and out for the next couple of hours, despite Kingie trying to see it off.

Lots of action today around the tower. Chicks visible now - both peering over the edge to watch what's about below. Mum came in with a feed and both fed well.

Very hot on the tower today for everything - peregrines and nuthatches. Once the sun had gone round leaving the platform in the shade, mum and one of the youngsters sat looking over the side. Hopefully this will happen more and more as the days go by.
