**An Unlikely Visitor!**

There's always one who likes to stand out from the crowd!

While wandering along a beach in South West England, I came across what appeared to be an ordinary gathering of gulls. Nothing particularly unusual, until I noticed one bird that clearly hadn't read the dress code.

A magnificent male Eider duck, looking rather smart in his black and white attire, surrounded by gulls who seemed completely unimpressed by their distinguished visitor.

Eiders are more commonly associated with northern coastal waters, so finding one amongst the gulls was a lovely surprise.

It's moments like these that remind me why I enjoy photography so much. You never quite know what you'll discover when you take the time to look a little closer.

Sometimes the most interesting character in a crowd is the one who doesn't quite belong.

**Sometimes we look. Sometimes we see.**

Discarded!

Another dog walk, another three photographs.

Three empty plant pots, a lonely coffee cup and a trainer that's somehow found its way onto a post!

Not exactly the subjects you set out to photograph, but that's what I love about taking my camera for a walk. You never quite know what you'll notice.

I've put these together in my latest RobbieCimages blog.

Take a look and tell me, which one catches your eye, and why?

One Walk. Three Photographs. Three Stories.

Sometimes you can go out with your camera without any particular photograph in mind.

All three were taken on the same walk. Which one tells the strongest story for you?
Sometimes we look. Sometimes we see. There is a difference.

And sometimes all it takes is a walk with a camera.

Elsewhere…

A solitary figure, a quiet moment, and a story I can only imagine.

Sometimes a photograph captures something that makes me stop and wonder. This was one of those moments.

I've written a short poem to accompany this image as part of my ongoing Through My Eyes book project.

But rather than share the words here, I'd like to invite you to visit my website and discover them for yourself.

📷 One photograph. One moment. One story.

Visit my webpage select Projects, then Through My Eyes. You'll find the photograph and its accompanying poem waiting there.

And tell me, what story does this image suggest to you?

Sometimes we look. Sometimes we see. There is a difference.

Why do I take photographs?
It isn't always about the subject. Sometimes it's the light, sometimes a fleeting moment, sometimes something that has been standing there for generations.

My latest blog brings together six very different photographs, portraiture, wildlife, landscape, sport and heritage, to explore what makes me stop, look and raise the camera.

Photography is my way of saying: I saw this.

Why I Take Photographs: It isn't always about the subject. 3 Oct 2026 12:58 I photograph many different things. People, wildlife, landscapes, sport, architecture and the traces of our past all find their way in front of my camera. On the surface they may have very little in common, but for me the re...

The Language of Water
Water is something I photograph again and again, although I hadn’t really appreciated just how often until I started putting this short film together.
Sometimes it is completely still, giving us reflections. At other times it becomes movement, texture and power.
The Language of Water brings together a selection of my photographs exploring those different moods, in both black and white and colour.
It’s a short film, just under two minutes, and my latest photographic AV on YouTube.
I hope you enjoy it, and as always, I’d be interested to know which image catches your eye.

Another side of my photography…
Much of the work I share is about places, history and the things we often walk past. But I’ve always enjoyed photographing people too, particularly when there’s an opportunity to create something a little different.
These portraits came from a studio session where the lighting, styling and expressions allowed us to create something much darker and more theatrical.
For me, portrait photography isn’t always about making someone look their best. Sometimes it’s about creating a character, a mood, or perhaps even the beginning of a story.
And, as usual, I couldn’t resist seeing what happened when I took the colour away.
Colour or black and white, which works for you?

Back from a break in Mid Wales…
After a few days away, it seemed only right to come back with one of the birds so closely associated with the Welsh landscape, The Red Kite.

Once pushed close to extinction in Britain, Mid Wales became central to its recovery. Seeing them circling overhead is quite something, but trying to catch one through the viewfinder is another matter entirely!

I managed to get this one just as it banked, showing those wonderful wings and unmistakable forked tail.

A good reminder that sometimes it pays to look up.

Sometimes we look. Sometimes we see.

One of the things photography has taught me is that you don't always need to go looking for the spectacular.

Sometimes the photograph is already there.

A tiny doorway almost disappearing into the bark of a tree. A familiar lighthouse seen in a particular way. An old barred opening surrounded by stone that has probably witnessed far more history than we ever will.

These are the things that make me stop. They're easily passed by, but give them a little more attention and they begin to tell their own story.

That's really what Through My Eyes has become for me, finding photographs in things we might otherwise overlook.

Which of these three would have stopped you?

Sometimes we look. Sometimes we see.

I don't think you have to travel very far to find wildlife worth photographing. Sometimes it's simply a case of stopping, watching and having a little patience.

These five photographs capture very different moments, the power of an owl in flight, the concentration of a heron, the calm reflection of a swan, the isolation of a gull and finally the gentleness of young goslings.

That's part of the attraction of wildlife photography for me. You can't tell your subject what to do. You can only be ready when it does it.

If you could have taken just one of these photographs, which would it have been?
