TPS - Tandridge Photographic Society

TPS - Tandridge Photographic Society TPS is a friendly and informal club and aims to help members expand and improve their photography by sharing skills, knowledge and ideas. INTERESTED IN JOINING?

TPS is a friendly camera club based in Oxted in Surrey, UK. We come together to help members and visitors learn more about the fascinating world of photography and how they might improve their own photos. OUR MEETINGS: We meet every Thursday evenings from 8-10pm, from September through to June, at St Mary's School in Oxted. Just to keep everyone on their toes, on the first Thursday of each month w

e meet on Zoom. This enables us to attract speakers from further afield. Our evenings comprise a diverse range of experiences, from talks from professional photographers, to skills and techniques tutorials, to competition nights where an external judge gives feedback on members’ photos. We also arrange ‘Out and Abouts’ throughout the year, where members meet at an interesting location to take photos and enjoy a new experience. OUR MEMBERS: TPS club members come from all walks of life, live in and around the Tandridge District, and have a wide range of photographic ability. With around 75 members, some have been taking great photos for many years, while others are new to the hobby and just starting out. It’s this diversity that ensures everyone can feel welcome and learn something new from other members. Importantly, it doesn’t matter what equipment you use. Some members have high end digital SLRs (or even shoot on film), while others simply use the camera in their smartphones (and often seem to get better results!). The only thing that matters is the photos you take, and whether you like them or feel you could improve them in some way. Whatever your experience with taking photos, our aim is to help you develop new skills and knowledge, and to inspire you to become the best photographer you can be. OUR HISTORY: The club was originally formed as the Caterham Community Camera Club in 1964 by the Caterham Community Association. We changed our name to the Tandridge Photographic Society in 1999 to reflect our core membership area. These days, we’re known as TPS. Prospective new members are welcome to attend a meeting at any time of year to learn more about what we do and decide if you’d like to join. Just let a committee member know when you turn up, and they’ll make you feel at home! The best time to join is in September at the start of the new season, when you can meet other new members and participate fully in club competitions and events across the year. Details of how to join can be requested from our Club Secretary via our website at http://tandridgeps.org.uk, or emailing [email protected]. We look forward to welcoming you to our club :-)

TPS is a member of the Caterham Community Association, Surrey Photographic Association and Tandridge Community Arts, and is affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain via the SPA.

TPS Out and About Challenge at Nymans – Friday 28th March 2025

Thirteen members and one family member met for coffee at the café at the above National Trust property. There was a little light rain as we arrived, but this cleared to reveal lots of spring sunshine while we were having coffee.

The premise of the challenge for the day was to only use a 50mm lens (or equivalent focal length applicable to APS-C or micro four thirds systems) to capture our images. As a focal length of 50mm is generally accepted to be similar to that of the human eye the images captured should be very similar to photographer’s own natural view. The use of zooms to gain larger images was not permitted. If a larger image was required, the photographer would need to move closer to the subject or conversely to obtain a wider shot move further from the subject.

The use of a fixed focal length did not prevent our photographers from using many other artistic styles, for example, ICM, soft focus and slower shutter speeds.

Following a morning wandering around the property we met back at the café at lunchtime to share our experiences before heading home.

Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.

You will be able to view a selection of our images from the day on the Club Flickr feed under the Out & About section.

TPS Out and About to Eastbourne – Sunday 2nd March 2025

Ten members and four family members met for coffee at a café near the seafront in Eastbourne on a slightly chilly but extremely sunny late winter’s day. The light was rather harsh and would test our photography throughout the day.

After coffee the various members went their own separate ways around Eastbourne taking in the various photo opportunities around the town, the pier, the beach and the seafront.

Following a couple of hours around town most members met at Harry Ramsden’s for traditional fish and chips and refreshments before heading out for the afternoon to take in the parts of town they had not visited during the morning session.

During our travels during the day many members met at various points around town and as the afternoon progressed members began to drift away towards home.

Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.

** TPS Out and About to Chartwell – Wednesday 19th February 2025 **

Six members and two family members met at the café at the gate of the above National Trust property before the estate opened.

Following suitable refreshments, and as the estate had opened, we made our way into the property. The house itself is closed at this time of year but we were able to access all other areas even though one of the routes to the woodland was inaccessible due repair work being carried out.

The ground was very wet underfoot but we were able to make our way to the woodland while pausing to take our photographs. There were some early signs of spring around the woodland particularly lots of snowdrops.

Following approximately one-hour stroll around the woodland we then proceeded to the exterior of the house and the walled garden, much of which had been prepared for planting of various flowers and vegetables (including some rather well established rhubarb that made some members really jealous).

We concluded the morning with further refreshments/lunch in the café before heading our separate ways.

Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.

TPS Out & About for Blue Hour at Westminster – Saturday 1st February 2025
Eleven members and two family members gathered on Saturday 1st February 2025 to attempt to capture some "blue" hour images on and around Westminster Bridge. This outing had originally been planned for Sunday 26th January but as the weather on that date was particularly wet a re-arranged event was well supported (two further members had braved the wet weather on the original date and therefore did not attend the re-arranged event).
We met on the south side of Westminster Bridge (on the Albert Embankment by St. Thomas’ Hospital. This gave us the opportunity to capture images across the Thames towards the Houses of Parliament and the surrounding area.
The weather was cold and cloudy and likelihood of capturing blue hour seemed a little hopeful. However, as the light began to fade the clouds were swept away and we were able to capture at least some favourable images.
Due to the cold weather some of the participants began to drift away home as the darkness descended. However, a few hardy souls remained and gathered some images after dark.
Thanks to all those who attended for your continued support.
You will also be able to view a selection of our images from the day on the Club Flickr feed under the Out & About section.
