In my Friday Live yesterday I talked about overwhelm - creatively mostly - but as I sat here on the beach this morning breathing in the clean fresh air, the smell of seawater and seaweed filling my nostrils, the sound of the waves surrounding me, the softness of the sand beneath my feet and the tang of salt on my lips as I watch the waves of the incoming tide overwhelm the beach and rocks. I realized that process happens twice a day and every time the beach comes back and is revealed a little differently. Weak areas are exposed or washed away, strong areas show resilience and treasure is to be found along the strand line. Each point of overwhelm teaches us something new about ourselves.

Just a little food for thought.

Fire is devastating, it rips lives apart, destroys buildings, people, memories and affects so many more people than you’d expect. Recently a fire ripped through the heart of Porthtowan, the village in Cornwall where I live. The Beach Cafe Porthtowan is the home to my book Still, my friendship with the owners Jonathan and Sue is one of my great joys of living here. In helping with the clear up I’ve noticed a strange, haunting beauty that comes after fire, the shadows of the things that once were, the twisted plastic deformed by heat, a clock stopped at a point when the fire brigade pumped water into the building, soot patterns on walls. All of it haunting and deeply upsetting but also beautiful and compelling. In the darkness can you find beauty?
