Street art and graffiti are protected by copyright the moment they're created, same as any other artistic work. illegality of the placement generally doesn't strip that protection, though it's a genuinely unsettled area in UK law. Photographing a substantial part of someone's piece and reproducing it (selling as a print, using commercially) is a reproduction of that copyright work, which needs the artist's permission unless an exception applies.
The exception people reach for"incidental inclusion" is narrow. UK law says copyright isn't infringed if a work is incidentally included in a photo. But if the art is the reason you took the shot and the main subject of the print, that's not incidental — that's the whole point of the sale. There's also no UK "freedom of panorama" carve-out for 2D works like murals (it only covers buildings and sculptures), so photographers don't get the same protection they might assume they have for street furniture or architecture.

One councillor has felt the full force of her constituency in backlash against her somewhat elitist post about the Wall Games.

Spent today down at Wall Games photographing some of the incredible work going up across Northampton, shot on the OM-3 kindly lent to me by OM System , and honestly, it did not disappoint.

I want to say something, because a local councillor put out a post questioning whether this was "money well spent." So let's talk about it.

Art doesn't have to be palatable to you for it to be valid. If disruptive, uncomfortable, "what even is that" art wasn't allowed to exist, we wouldn't have Jackson Po***ck. We wouldn't have Salvador Dalí. Some of the most important artists in history were dismissed in their own time by people who thought they knew better. Deciding art only counts when it's a nice mural of a football badge or a "positive message about keeping streets clean" isn't community values, it's just elitism with better PR.

And here's the bit that actually matters: these artists aren't being paid a fortune to turn up. Many are doing this for free, or close to it. They're spending their own time, using their own materials, at their own cost, to transform a town centre that was grey and neglected into something genuinely beautiful. They're doing it through a properly organised, council-backed, vetted process. This isn't rogue. This isn't unchecked. These artists went through rigorous approval to be here.

Art is art regardless of the medium, regardless of whether it's a spray can or a canvas, and regardless of whether it fits neatly into what one person on the council thinks looks nice.

Street art isn't your art ... But it can be part of it.

Don't take the photo of their work and imply it's your photo that's amazing if the whole of that photo is their art.

So I need to share something huge. Mega. I was utterly shocked to be asked to take this position. I mean who the hell am I?! But I think it's about what I do and how I show up that got me this. Thank you for allowing me to be me. In the words of my beloved icon Dolly: find who you are, and do it on purpose.

I can't wait to see y'all submitting images to help us bring home the world cup!

Apparently we haven’t made enough noise about competitions this month… 😉

Please welcome Khandie Photography, our new Team UK Captain for the World Photographic Cup 2027!

The BIPP represents the United Kingdom in this worldwide competition, selecting a national team to compete against outstanding professional photographers from countries across the globe.

That team of creatives will compete for individual awards in their category, while their results also count towards (hopefully) winning the overall World Photographic Cup for the UK.

It’s a big deal, and we want as many of you as possible to be a part of Team UK to make it count - so please do get involved.

Our previous captains have given a huge amount of time and hard work to Team UK over the years, and we’re extremely grateful for everything they have done.

Khandie now takes over for 2027 with a fresh approach, along with an incredible amount of energy, enthusiasm and innate ability to rally the troops. 👍

And for the first time, The BIPP will also send Team UK representatives to the awards ceremony in Calgary, Alberta, in April 2027. (Just ready to collect our trophy!)

The final Team UK submission is due at the end of October, so start thinking about the work that could represent your country. Khandie will be communicating what the team needs and showing you how to put your images forward for selection over the coming weeks.

Already entering our Monthly Image Competition or IPM26? Good! You can enter those and put work forward for Team UK as well, and it's a great way to get your work in front of the right sets of eyes for selection too.

Not every "different" face fits the standard modeling mould and that's exactly why I love shooting with people who don't.

Had the pleasure of working with a model recently who's signed with an agency that actually celebrates diversity, not just says it does. She's got a facial birthmark. I've got one on my leg people usually mistake for a burn. We compared notes mid-shoot.

If your look doesn't fit the industry's narrow idea of "standard", I want to photograph you. That's the work I'm proudest of.
