They start days, and sometimes weeks, beforehand.

Think about the roles you're most likely to play.

Choose clothes that support those characters.

Consider hair, make-up, colours and textures.

Gather inspiration.

Think about what makes you different.

A little planning can make an enormous difference.

Turn up prepared, not perfect.

Your headshots should be intentional, not accidental.

They're struggling because they're clinging to a fantasy.

The fantasy that the right agent will suddenly change everything.

The fantasy that one audition will fix years of confusion.

The fantasy that talent alone is enough.

The reality is much less glamorous.

Careers are usually built slowly.

One decision.

One relationship.

One self-tape.

One skill.

One improvement at a time.

The actors who last aren't always the most talented.

They're often the most resilient.

Kill the fantasy.

Build the career.

Hair can completely change the way casting reads you, especially if it's one of your defining features.

Length, texture, volume, styling and even where you place your parting can shift you from contemporary to period, from romantic lead to protagonist, without changing anything else.

The trick isn't changing who you are.

It's learning how to use what you already have.

Shot descriptions

Cream blouse: Soft, natural girl next door.

White dress: Classical period heroine.

Black lace: Romantic lead with an edge.

Denim: Modern, grounded protagonist.

Black dress: Strong, self-assured leading woman, with a slight Game of Thrones edge.

One of the hardest parts of my job is persuading actors to let go of a photograph they love.

Not because it's a bad photograph.

Because it isn't doing the job.

The image that makes you feel most attractive isn't always the image that makes somebody castable.

Sometimes the strongest shot is the one that's slightly uncomfortable. The one that feels a little more vulnerable, a little less polished and a lot more human.

I've seen actors resist changing their hair, their expression, their styling, their casting range and even the way they select images because they don't want to let go of the version of themselves they prefer.

But casting isn't looking for perfection.

They're looking for people they can believe.

And that changes everything.

I hear this a lot.

Great actors getting recalls but going no further because they make things complicated and start doing more or doing something different.

A recall means they already liked something about what you did the first time.

They're checking you are what they thought you were.

Once clients start repeating what they did that resulted in the recall nice things start to happen.

Actors hate hearing this.

If casting directors aren't getting far enough to watch your reel, your acting isn't the thing being tested.

Your headshots.

Your Spotlight profile.

Your reels.

Your positioning.

Your casting range.

All of these things shape the decisions that happen BEFORE anyone ever sees what you can do.

I've reviewed countless profiles where the problem wasn't talent at all.

The problem was clarity.

Before you blame your acting, make sure you've given it a fair chance.

The interesting thing is what happens next.

Suddenly, actors start getting more self-tapes. More meetings. More interest from agents. More opportunities.

Not because they became a better actor overnight.

Because people could finally see them clearly.
