When I first started photographing out of train windows, I was so worried that the imperfections in the glass would ruin the images! But now I realise that it’s the scratches and the grime and the streaking raindrops which give the photos character and texture. Each window acts like its own filter laid over the lens, subtly shaping the light and transforming the view.

On the train from Madrid to Marseille, I was amazed to notice huge birds sat atop castle nests, themselves perched on pylon kingdoms. And on closer inspection, there were the heads of tiny stork babies poking out, waiting for food. An incredible sight. Bristling nests made of thousands of twigs set against the regimented latticework of the electricity lines.

A split-second decision meant I did not photograph them from the frame of the train window! I broke my own rule! But perhaps rules are there to be broken occasionally.

It seemed like an appropriate thing to post at the beginning of my fourth decade on this earth.

The door windows on the train from Porto to Pocinho are only 9.6 cm wide.
Too small for most landscapes.
Perfect for tiles.

On the train into Milan last night, I witnessed one of the most exciting lightning storms I’ve ever seen! It was too dark to frame the window properly, but I still wanted to share the thrill I felt through this iPhone footage. Electricity ripped the sky in half. Cracking along telegraph lines, snapping over rooftops, hissing, slapping, splintering. Writing jagged letters across the dark!

For five seconds, I photographed strangers through the window of a moving F train. But by then, they didn’t really feel like strangers anymore…

On Thursday, I didn’t take the train anywhere…but I did bring fragments of a petal-filled rail journey back into the busiest station in the Netherlands.

With the support of , I placed the work in Utrecht Centraal - sharing a view that begins just beyond the platform.

What stayed with me most was speaking to people who had travelled near and far - some who recognised the route instantly, others encountering it for the first time. Seeing the work in a place of constant movement seemed to bring the quiet of the journey into the heart of the station. Thank you to everyone who stopped to talk, share their journeys, and spend a moment with the work.

Something a little closer to home…the Thameslink from St Pancras to London Bridge!

A boat slips under Blackfriars Bridge - I can see the tiny faces of the water-goers. There’s St Paul’s behind, and Borough Yards in front.

The Shard and a bird.
The Tate and a cloud.
A red No. 17 bus and a green button bridge.
“Take courage!” the city tells me. I will.

Then a red crane and the great cathedral again.
Look! This bridge has a heart.

Now let’s go back across the river - there’s a couple looking on towards Tower Bridge…
Would you like to see a video of this journey?
