'Fantasy Is A Place Where It Rains' performed as part of the Kantor season, by European Theatre Arts at Rose Bruford College.
Fantasy is a place where it rains is a response to Kantor’s work and thinking. It is a collection of materials born out of memories, improvisations and shared reflections set in a generic interior. A “home”.
The show aims to explore the ambiguity and the state of imbalance created when private and public collide, navigating the uncharted territory between interior and exterior, individual and society, natural and artificial.
Re-telling personal stories always alters them slightly, opening up a space of uncertainty, in which facts and perceptions blur, images fade one into another, private consciousness transforms into shared memory. This led to conversations about Tinder dates and apples, whipped cream and families, wild dances and gorillas, cakes and bras, love and death.
“The truth in art exists in the tension between contrasting realities” writes Anne Bogart. The effort is therefore to work between the unknown and the specific, to jump and skip between right and left hemisphere of the brain, between intuition and analysis, between logic and imagination.
Our lives as individuals and as social beings intersect in an unsolvable puzzle of relations and interactions that, layer upon layer, build and dissolve our identities in an endless process of growth and re-invention.
We explored the meaning of an ensemble in this context, and made it into a theatrical object: a kaleidoscope of our personal lives, our shared histories, our differences and misunderstandings, our desires and fears. Fantasy is a place where it rains is therefore an attempt, and consequent failure, to tame the uncontrollable chaos of life.
