Adept Photography Photography and travel are my passions. Bio: My name is Matthew O’Toole, I am a North West photographer based in Liverpool.

I am the owner and proprietor of Adept Photography. I have a long history with photography, as I began taking images from an early age - at first with borrowed cameras and then with my own. At the age of eighteen, I travelled around Europe equipped with my Pentax SLR film camera and a zoom lens, which gave me a thirst to improve my skills and to develop a style as a photographer. From that moment I knew I wanted to be a photographer. In 2007, I switched to Digital, a move from which I have never looked back. At that time I also decided I wanted to realise my dream of becoming a professional photographer. So, from 2009-2010, I studied a BTEC and an HND in photography at college. I also quit my job and bought a plane ticket to Nepal, which was the beginning of my travels. Since then I have travelled extensively with my camera. I enjoy taking images from around the globe – capturing diversity of culture and spirituality. The focus of my work tends to be on sites of cultural, spiritual and religious significance; taking images of the people, and the architecture at these specific locations, hopefully capturing the atmosphere they generate. It is a personal journey of self discovery and adventure, something like a pilgrimage. The idea is that through travelling to these destinations and recording my experiences, I will be not only keeping a record of my development as a photographer but also as an individual - reflecting my personal insights through my work.

"Alhambra"

The Alhambra palaces and gardens are a fortress complex located in Granada, Andalusia, in Spain. It is one of the most renowned monuments of Islamic architecture and the only well-preserved palace from the medieval Islamic era. As we went around the gardens, the sun was burning; it was extremely hot. But as we went into the palace, the interiors remained remarkably cool, providing a striking contrast to the sweltering heat outside. This refreshing atmosphere was the result of intelligent design and careful planning. High ceilings, strategically placed windows, and airy corridors were all designed to ensure comfort, making the palace a serene retreat regardless of the outdoor temperatures.

"A week in Granada"

The Churches of Granada

I went to Granada with a friend in 2016. I have always wanted to see the Alhambra as part of my bucket list - and my bucket list mostly stems back to my childhood dreams of travel...

So, my friend and I got fairly cheap flights into Malaga, and we took the taxi ride to Granada. It was baking hot when we landed was my first impression. We then spent a week in Granada. I did a night tour of the Alhambra, on my own in the first instance, and then my friend and I did the day tour, plus we both did the gardens tour on the last day we were there.

One of the things that struck me about Granada, though, was not only that the Alhambra- that was nice- but also not as ornate as I was expecting(maybe that was something like you might find in Iran). But on the other side of this, there were in Granada itself an amazing number of churches with incredible gold decor in their interiors. These churches literally had altars dripping in what I imagine was gold leaf - I cannot imagine solid gold.

I imagine at its height, when the Moorish Empire ruled, the Alhambra may have been just as resplendent. But my takeaway from this was that, compared to the churches of Granada, the Alhambra seemed to demonstrate, in the face of all this Catholic opulence, a kind of humility in its simplicity.....

The last time I was in Amsterdam was in 2011 - I was visiting a friend there, and I used the opportunity to thoroughly photograph the city. I had been to Amsterdam many times before, partly because I have family living there, but I had never had a chance to properly photograph the city before. On this occasion it rained a lot, but I did not let that stand in the way of good shots. Instead, I tried to capture the overcast and moody skies and rainy autumn days.
