Earl Heads For North Wales

On this day 150 years ago in 1876 passenger services arrived on The Settle & Carlisle Railway.

Construction of the famous 72 mile line began on 1870 by The Midland Railway.

Since then many forms of motive power had ventured along the line in all kinds of weather even at 1 point 4 seasons in 10 minutes.

Route made famous of being part of the very last standard gauge steam hauled service at the end of steam in August 1968 The 1T57.

During the 1980’s the route was under threat of closure but thanks to major campaigns not only from the late Ron Cotton with support from Michael Portillo & local communities the line was saved from closure in 1990.

Since the 1970’s the line had played host to steam hauled specials with many big names locos had travelled along the scenic line in the country.

The Settle & Carlisle line has a special place in our hearts and as you can see here with some of our still shots said it all.

Happy Anniversary and here’s to another 150 years of The Settle & Carlisle Railway.
