Lost to the elements in East Yorkshire... 🌾🏚️

Hidden deep within the rural landscape near Wawne sits the eerie, skeletal remains of Meaux Abbey Cottage. While the ground beneath it dates back to 1150, once serving as a bustling 85-acre Cistercian monastery, this striking brick-and-stone ruin is actually a 19th-century farm worker's cottage.

It was built around 1828 by the wealthy Wise family, who purchased the historic estate to transform the former abbey grounds into a thriving Victorian agricultural farm.

Decades of abandonment have allowed nature to completely reclaim the property. Today, the entire eastern gable has collapsed, fully exposing the interior chimney stack, while mature trees and thick brambles push right through the surviving masonry. Because it was built centuries after King Henry VIII levelled the monastery, the cottage is legally excluded from the scheduling protections placed on the ancient monument fields, leaving it in a legal grey area to gracefully decay.

For those wanting to catch a glimpse, a loop of public footpaths along Meaux Lane and the historic Wawne Drain offers views of the ruins from a safe distance. Just be mindful of local lore, isolated and swallowed by vegetation, the ruin is widely known in regional folklore as the "Haunted Abbey Cottage", where walkers still whisper about spotting the apparitions of White Monks wandering the treeline....

Looking for beach access along the Skipsea coastline?

The brand-new steps at Haven Far Grange are complete! 🌊 After severe coastal erosion rendered the old cliff path unsafe, this new heavy-duty staircase was engineered directly into the cliff face to restore access to the shore.

It features wide, anti-slip treads, continuous safety handrails, and multiple flat rest landings, making the steep descent down to the sand much safer and easier to navigate. Perfect to know if you're walking the coastal path or looking for a beach day along this stretch of the East Yorkshire coast! 🏖️📍

Unlocking history from above.

This top-down aerial view was captured and stitched together from two images revealing the enormity of the site as well as showing the subtle earthworks and hidden footprint of Meaux Abbey.

Centuries after its dissolution, the faint ridges, sunken boundaries, and geometric lines in the dry grassland still trace the outline of the historic Cistercian monastery.

The Hull Cenotaph and Boer war memorial at Paragon Square is looking absolutely stunning after its recent deep clean!

The stonework is brighter, the details are sharper, and it stands prouder than ever as a beautiful tribute in the heart of our city centre. A fantastic job preserving our local history and ensuring our heroes are honoured with the respect they deserve. 🌹

The striking monks of Meaux Abbey carvings.

Founded in 1150, Meaux Abbey was home to Cistercian "white monks" devout men and master engineers who drained the surrounding Yorkshire marshlands, raised massive wool herds, and established the original port of Wyke that eventually became modern Hull.
