Collage featuring social commentary with a political edge. Fabulous new exhibition ‘On The Margins’ by Ilana Cheyfitz now showing on the FLOW Wall, Eden Court Theatre, Inverness. “For decades, Americans have watched as their social safety nets have been torn apart, and stable employment, housing, and healthcare have become increasingly difficult to obtain. From this, a common feeling of upset and isolation has emerged among many of America’s citizens, regardless of political affiliation. In collaboration with my writing partner, Avery Ravitz, I conducted more than 30 interviews with a range of people affected by the US government. From these conversations, we chronicled the stories of individuals whose political opinions reflect their lived experiences in the US Taking excerpts from these interviews and juxtaposing them with altered images of traditional American advertising from the 1950’s through the 1980s, I highlight the disconnect between American exceptionalism and the reality of a crumbling social infrastructure. By integrating expressions of anxiety, alienation, anger, resignation, and reflection into my work, I pull at the edges of a long and expansive history of American advertising and the lies we have been sold about this crumbling empire. Ilana Cheyfitz is a US citizen. While raised in the States, she has now made Scotland her home.”
