The calm after the storm

This tree really caught my eye on Sunday. Driving back home I noticed it from the car. That internal voice 'Get the shot' wouldn't stop nagging, so even though I thought I was finished up for the day I pulled over to take a look. It wasn’t until I looked through a long lens that I realised the lines at the base of the tree were not roots, but broken branches, no doubt following a recent storm.

At the time I didn't think too much more of it, however once I saw it on my computer screen later the image really jumped out at me. For me, there is a certain poetry to the scene. The broken tree brings with it a somber mood, of violence and destruction, yet the tree still stands. Also, the younger tree which stands next to it, seemingly unscathed, seems to tell a story of the passage of time, and questions as to whether one day it will meet the same fate. I’m still undecided whether the mood created is somber, or of a calm resilience…? What do you think?

Photography is, of course, very subjective. Personally, I feel this is one of the most successful images I have taken, given that it brings with it such a strong story.

The scene earlier this afternoon in the Highlands.

Many areas of Scotland have had snow over the past few days. Having recently discovered this incredible tree, I had been waiting for the opportunity to photograph it in the white stuff. Thankfully all the elements came together, and just as I arrived there was some beautiful light piercing through the snow shower coating the mountains behind.

Well worth the frozen fingers!

Edinburgh was feeling very Christmassy in the fog last night 🎄🎁🎅

Having seen that the Haar had blown in off the east coast I took a wander around the centre of Edinburgh. The Old Town streets were looking very festive indeed, and the fog really helped to add that extra atmosphere.

A vibrant sunset this evening.

Although the forecast looked favourable, it wasn't until after the sun dipped below the horizon that there was any real sign that we would get some significant colour. The sky soon became awash with a myriad of orange hues, providing the perfect backdrop for the Edinburgh skyline

A moody looking Old Town on Monday evening.

Edinburghs skyline is a constantly changing and evolving cityscape. Thankfully there is still enough of the character and charm to make you feel, at a glance, like you're taking a step back in time.

This evening from Calton Hill. Princes Street was glowing earlier, and even though it's a Monday night there's still plenty of people out doing their Christmas shopping.

A classic Edinburgh scene, but for a good reason

Edinburgh this evening looking down Waverley Bridge

A wet Monday evening was still bustling with people in the centre of Edinburgh. I ventured out to take a look at the Christmas market lights, however this is the shot I was immediately drawn to. St Giles Cathedral towering above the Old Town.

Thanks

Stirling at night

Here is another shot, this time in landscape, from Tuesday's sunset and twilight. Mirror-like reflections of Scotland's ancient capital with the mighty Ben Lomond in the distance.

Stirling at sunset tonight

This is a shot I have had in the back of my mind for a while. It was very much a waiting game, allowing the city lights of Stirling to become bright enough against the twilight blues.

Pleased to say that not a single pixel of this image is AI

Tonight's sunset from North Queensferry

What initally started out as a slow burner soon erupted into a barnstomer. The Forth Bridges were looking pretty spectacular tonight.
