Some weddings are difficult to sum up in just ten photographs… and Keely & Chris’s was definitely one of them! 😂

Keely made one of the best bridal entrances I’ve seen, arriving at Bridge House Barn aboard a giant swan boat along the Grand Union Canal before joining Chris for their tipi wedding celebrations.

Later in the day, Chris surprised her by serenading her in front of everyone — before the pair of them suddenly broke into a full breakdance routine to Ice Ice Baby. As you do! 🦢🎤🕺

We’d photographed their pre-wedding shoot a couple of months earlier, so by the wedding day they were completely at ease in front of the camera. They were relaxed, confident and very much themselves — I barely needed to give them any direction at all. I could simply follow the fun and capture everything as it unfolded.

The whole day was helped along by the brilliant Nathan Connelly | Host & DJ, who kept everything rolling along nicely while making sure the energy never dropped.

A brilliantly personal wedding and an absolute joy to photograph from beginning to end.

From one of the hottest wedding days I’ve ever photographed, to Blossom delivering the rings and a surprise pizza delivery that wasn’t quite what it seemed… this was certainly a wedding to remember!

DIRECT SUN. NO PROBLEM. ☀️📸

I often get asked by slightly confused wedding guests why I’m breaking out multiple off-camera flashes on a bright sunny day.

Surely there’s already plenty of light?

Well… yes. Too much of it, in completely the wrong place.

Overhead summer sun creates deep shadows around the eyes, very contrasty faces and, if you simply expose for the people, a bright washed-out sky behind them.

The trick is to find as much shade as possible — which at The Willow Marsh Farm on this particular day was virtually impossible! — and position everyone so that, as far as possible, the sun is behind them.

I then expose the camera for the sky, keeping the colour and detail in the clouds, before bringing in diffused off-camera strobes to put exactly the amount of light I want back onto everyone’s faces.

That way we keep that gorgeous natural backlight and fringe light from the sun, but without panda eyes, silhouettes or blown-out backgrounds.

Rather than fighting the sun, you make it part of the photograph.

And this really was a day when knowing how to deal with difficult light mattered — Paige & Jason got married on the hottest day of the year, around 37°C. 🔥

We adapted the day around the conditions, avoided dragging them around in the worst of the heat and stayed later when things had finally cooled down a little, even though the timings had already run over.

I’ve ended the video with Paige’s lovely Google review because, ultimately, that’s the bit that matters far more than the technical stuff — how the couple actually felt they were looked after on the day.

When your ring bearer has four legs… 🐾💍

Blossom had a very important job at Paige & Jason’s wedding — delivering the rings down the aisle at the beautiful .

And after a flawless delivery, she was safely collected by , who had been hired to look after her and make sure she could be part of the day without Paige & Jason having to worry about a thing.

Such a brilliant little moment to capture on film — and definitely one of the more enthusiastic ring bearers I’ve seen! 😂🐶

37 degrees. The hottest wedding I’ve ever photographed. 🔥☀️

But what a day for Paige & Jason at the beautiful The Willow Marsh Farm. ❤️

Yesterday was certainly a challenge — my associate Dan and I genuinely felt like we’d run a marathon by the end of it! 😂 In that sort of heat, though, looking after the couple comes first.

We kept and Jason out of the direct sun as much as possible and saved most of their portraits until later in the evening, when some cloud finally rolled in.

It was still around 34°C, so not exactly cool 😂 — but at least we could get them out of that relentless direct sunlight.

That’s where a bit of experience comes in. We used off-camera flash to create the light we wanted rather than relying on what the weather gave us.

Cold, rain, darkness or apparently the surface of the sun… the weather hasn’t beaten us in over 15 years of doing this 📸🔥

And a special mention has to go to their gorgeous little girl Olive, and of course Blossom the dog, who both added so much personality to an already brilliant day. ❤️🐾

Congratulations Paige & Jason — you absolutely smashed it.

This photographer isn’t afraid of the dark. 🌙📸

Or the rain, for that matter. ☔

Some photographers see a dark winter evening or a downpour and start looking nervously at the weather app.

I start getting the lights out. 😄

Rain, darkness, gloomy skies and winter weddings don’t have to mean compromising on your wedding photos. Quite often, they give us the opportunity to create something far more dramatic.

With off-camera flash, backlighting and a bit of experience, rain becomes atmosphere, darkness becomes drama, and an ordinary corner of a venue can suddenly look like a movie set.

So if you’re considering an autumn or winter wedding this year, don’t let the British weather put you off.

I can’t promise it won’t rain.

I can promise I won’t run away when it does. 😂
