Did anyone get up early enough to photograph this morning’s lunar eclipse?

Across the UK, the partial eclipse peaked at 5:12am BST, with about 94% of the Moon covered at maximum. It was one of those mornings where the alarm clock became part of the camera kit.

If you photographed it, we’d love to see what you got — camera or phone, polished edit or straight out of camera.

And if you missed it, no shame. 5am is brutal.

Could the iPhone 18 Pro Max bring a genuinely camera-like control to mobile photography?

Recent reports suggest Apple may introduce a variable-aperture main camera on the iPhone 18 generation — potentially only on the Pro Max. Unlike the fixed aperture used on recent iPhone Pro cameras, a variable aperture could physically change the lens opening to control how much light reaches the sensor.

For photographers, that could mean more control over exposure and depth of field, and potentially smoother-looking video in bright conditions. The really interesting question is how much manual control Apple would actually give us — reports suggest it could allow aperture adjustment, but Apple has confirmed none of this yet.

So for now: RUMOUR, not announcement.

Would proper aperture control make you take iPhone photography more seriously, or would you still reach for your camera?

Turn on your camera grid and make two versions of the same photograph. First, place the subject in the centre. Then place it near one of the points where the grid lines meet. Compare the two: where does your eye go first, and which frame has more room to breathe? The rule of thirds is a guide, not a law — the useful part is learning to make the choice deliberately. Save this and try it on your next walk.

Sunday photography idea: give yourself one hour with no pressure to create anything impressive. Take your camera or phone somewhere local and photograph whatever catches your attention — light, people, details, shapes or ordinary moments. Photography can be a reason to slow down, get outside and notice more of what's around you. That's a big part of UK Social Photography. Learn. Do. Meet. Belong. www.uksocialphotography.co.uk
