Real men love guinea pigs. 🐹❤️

Throwback to 2021 when Jon put on his Deadpool cosplay and Earl Grey stole the spotlight.

Over the years we've met so many guinea pig dads who absolutely adore their little furry companions, and honestly, we love seeing it.

Because guinea pigs don't care whether you're a superhero, a cosplayer, a builder, an artist, or anything else.

As long as the snacks keep coming.

Earl Grey certainly approved. ❤️

I think we all need a reminder about hay 👍😘
A piggy's fundamental need is first and foremost HAY. Piles and mounds of it to address their primary health and emotional needs.
Natural is best with a base layer of substrate like paper based or shavings with piles of hay on top.
So please let's all see far more hay 🌾
Big set-ups, small set-ups with toys, hammocks and cuddle sacks, bridges, hides, ramps!
It honestly doesn't matter what you choose so long as you incorporate heaps and mounds of sweet smelling fresh hay! So ditch the hay racks and lets all address our piggies basic needs.
Piggies need lots of hay for not only good health but also to address their emotional needs. A piggy will be happiest tunneling, sleeping, playing or grazing in hay.
Hay is absolutely essential for the piggy to be able to form a healthy open ball of food in it's stomach that quickly digests and fuels it's little body.
The chewing action of long strands of hay also keeps the piggies teeth in good order, so avoiding tooth spurs and ultimately expensive vet bills.
I limit veggies to a once a day feed and it doesn't matter if you choose morning or afternoon or evening as it is just a nice treat way of topping up vitamins.
Fresh foraged grass and leaves 🍃can be fed any time as this nutritious food also helps to form an open food ball in the stomach which also allows speedy digestion.
A piggy also needs to produce the soft caecotrophs which are smaller bobbly poops that the piggy eats almost as soon as they are excreted 😁a totally natural thing which all piggies do.
With all the hay and forage and veggies provided you will probably find your piggies will want far less hard food like pellets or meusli mix and will live healthy and happy lives

FOOTNOTE : I just had an inquiry about wasted hay so thought to clarify somewhat 😊 You will always have some waste with lots of hay in the pen or cage as with any bedding and substrate but the advantages of the effect on piggy's health and well being outweighs the fact that without loads of hay you run the risk of large vet bills as the piggy gets older and could develop teeth and jaw problems and tummy issues.

In between a weekly clean fluff up the hay so 💩💩drops through and just remove any really damp spots before a daily top up

Some Guinea Pig Fun Facts 💚

- They don’t come from Guinea. In fact, guinea pigs originate from the Andes region of South America. The ‘guinea’ in their name is a bit of a mystery. One theory is that they were first brought to Europe by Spanish explorers in the 1500s via Guinea in Africa, so people thought they came from there, or that it could be a corruption of ‘Guiana’, an area in South America.

- They are not related to pigs at all. Even though male guinea pigs are called boars and females are called sows, they are rodents. Their scientific name is ‘Cavia porcellus’, which is why they are sometimes referred to as ‘cavies’. The word ‘porcellus’ is latin for ‘little pig’. This name may have come about because of the pig-like squeaking noises they make.

- They like to chat to each other. While they enjoy human affection, guinea pigs need to be with others of their own kind and should always be kept in pairs or small groups. They communicate using several noises, including the well-known ‘wheek-wheek’ call – a sign of excitement or to find a friend – and a low ‘purring’ sound, which they make when they are feeling content and chilled out. They also emit a series of short ‘putt-putt’ noises when they are exploring

Help your piggies to stay cool during this heatwave by giving them a cold wet towel to lie on, ice packs, plenty of water at all times & a fan if possible

Heat kills guinea pigs 😞

Understanding a guinea pig's normal physiological parameters helps with identifying changes in health. The information below lists the normal physiological parameters for guinea pigs.

🙂This is a great place to start when evaluating the health of your guinea pig.
Some guinea pigs have a slightly different 'normal' from the information below but the important thing to pay attention to are changes in your pet's normal.

🤒 If you notice any changes to your guinea pig's health, it is best to discuss these changes with a Vet. 📱🏥👍
