James Kelly - Landscape Photography

James Kelly - Landscape Photography Landscape photographer (with YouTube video diary’s) from the NE/Highlands of Scotland. Traveling

I began running photography workshops back in 2012 for those who want to embark on a photographic adventure. In my mind the best way to teach, and to learn, is to get somebody’s undivided attention which is why I’ve focused on 1-2-1 tuition as the way forward. This enables me to discover what photography skills you already have and where you wish to develop and push yourself. The ultimate goal is

for you to capture the best of Scotland’s scenery by knowing the lengths you can go to, understanding your kit, the surroundings, the light, composition and the story you’re trying to capture in every frame.

The weather in the Faroe Islands has been doing what it does best recently, changing its mind every five minutes.

Two weeks of beautiful weather, two weeks of storms, and now sunshine again, although still around 5°C / 41°F, so let’s not get carried away.

The cloud formations and shadows moving across the landscape have been absolutely mesmerising, and it’s exactly why I love photographing here.

I currently have one space remaining on my Faroe Islands Photography Workshop, 08–15 September 2026.

I also offer private one and multi day photography tours for those visiting the Faroe Islands and wanting to experience the islands from a photographer’s point of view.

And if Scotland is calling, my Isle of Harris Photography Workshop will run from 7–13 April 2027.

Seeing post his beautiful photographs from Scotland is making me homesick.

Distance makes the heart grow fonder. I have a list of places to visit when I return home later this year.

For now, I will just have to endure the landscape of the Faroe Islands 😆

I am very excited to back on the Isle of Harris and leading this 1 day workshop and then part of the amazing Creative Retreat that Margaret Soraya has organised.

An opportunity to participate in a 1-day photography workshop with James Kelly as part of the Creative light pre-festival workshops, which are open to all. The main festival is sold out, but we have a few spaces on these single day workshops. So, if you are visiting the island or live here, you are welcome to join.

J@James Kelly - Landscape Photography is a friendly and knowledgeable photographer who has been running photography workshops for several years. He is super helpful with the technicals without being intimidating in any way at all!. James will look to stop at a couple of main locations, but will be guided by the weather and conditions on the day to get you to the best places at any given time. Depart from Tarbert at 8am and return by 5pm in complimentary transport.

At Bow Fiddle Rock, the sun had only just climbed above the horizon when the light began to turn harsh. Instead of chasing colour, I turned to black and white, letting the silhouette of this striking sea arch in the Moray Firth carry the image. A long exposure softened the water, while the rock stood unshaken against the light.

Sgurr na Lapaich, standing proud in the Scottish Highlands. Reaching this view took three hours of off-path climbing, through bursts of warm sun, sudden rain, and shifting clouds that rolled over the ridges. The light came and went in seconds, painting the slopes before vanishing again into shadow.

The island of Koltur – “colt” – sits alone in the sea, its single peak watching over the waters. Around its shores, puffins, storm petrels, and other seabirds trace endless paths through wind and rain. Today, a curtain of showers swept past, blurring the island’s edges and leaving just enough light to reveal its quiet strength.

In the Faroe Islands, the clouds dance across the sky, never in the same place for more than a heartbeat. The light follows, spilling over the land in fleeting moments, brushing the hillsides with soft, golden strokes before retreating into shadow. Standing here, camera in hand, it feels like the landscape is painting just for me – and only for a second.
