The art of golden hour: the hour after sunrise or before sunset when the sun sits low, the light turns warm and soft, and the shadows stretch out further.

Everything looks better in it, which is why I keep chasing it, from Bristol's harbourside, Brandon Hill Park and St George's to Oxford, and further afield in Lisbon, Sydney and Kerala.

My favourite things to look for are silhouettes against the glow, long shadows, and warm light catching small details, like an arm resting on the side of a chair.

Which of these is your favourite, and where's your go-to spot for golden hour?

Chance encounters are the best reason to carry a camera everywhere 📷

I walk past these garages all the time on my way to get lunch when I'm in the office, and the doors are usually shut. Today they were open, and inside were two stunning classic Porsche 911s 😍🚗

The light was soft, and I happened to have my little X100VI with me, so here's what I took!

What's the best thing you've stumbled across with a camera in your hand?

Brandon Hill at sunset yesterday 🌅

There’s a fleeting two-week window each autumn where stepping out of my office at 5 PM lines up perfectly with golden hour on Brandon Hill.

Between unpredictable weather and working from home, actually catching the park bathed in this light, at this exact time, is pretty rare. Yesterday, the timing and the sky finally cooperated. When the sun sits this low and warm, the light does almost all the work for - you just have to be there to press the shutter! 📷

Do you have a local spot you always revisit when the light gets good?

Where to take friends and family visiting you in Bristol so you look like you have your life together (and take some nice pictures while you're at it!)

Something a little different; I had fun putting this one together. It is by no means an exhaustive list - just some lovely spots I have been to more recently. There is definitely a strong leaning toward coffee spots and record shopping here, because that's why I enjoy doing most 🤣☕🎶

Drop some of your favourite Bristol weekend spots, photogenic or not, in the comments! I'm putting together a bucket list ✅

Pumpkin picking at Millets Farm at the weekend, followed by my very first pumpkin carving 🎃 Swipe to the end to see the result, I’m pretty proud of it!

All that orange suited my X100VI film recipe very nicely. Comment “Pumpkin” and I’ll send it over 📷👨🏾‍🍳

Autumn has landed. Golden light, falling leaves, and Bristol looking glorious 🍂

It's my favourite season, mainly because the light just hits differently this time of year. These are a few snaps from yesterday's sunny morning walk from the bus stop to the office ➡️

7 weeks in with the Fujifilm X100VI - and a September photo round-up. 📸✨

It took a few weeks to truly click with it, but this little camera has hardly left my side all month, tagging along for birthdays, days at home, visits from friends, trips to the market, live sport, and everyday wandering around Bristol.

If you are curious how it stacks up as a daily driver, here are a few quick thoughts.

Unlike my heavier Sony setup, the X100VI requires zero effort to pack. Pulling it out doesn't make things feel like an official photoshoot, which makes candid moments with friends and family, and street frames feel infinitely more natural and low-pressure.

I have also committed to shooting strictly JPEGs with the Fuji to lean into custom recipes and force myself to nail exposures in-camera. Honestly, I know everyone says this, but the out-of-camera colours are just solid enough that I haven't felt the urge to shoot in RAW or jump into Lightroom for any editing - the most I've been doing is some levelling in Instagram for slightly wonkier captures!

It definitely took some adjusting coming from a full-frame hybrid, and I do have one or two minor qualms with it that I will save for a future post, but for now, it is an absolute joy to use.

For my fellow Fujifilm shooters, do you shoot straight-to-JPEG, or are you firmly in the RAW camp? Let me know below! 👇

A few shots from my first look inside the finished Sloane Robinson building yesterday.

Following its construction over the last few years as a member of University staff made stepping inside and exploring feel well overdue. Incredible scale, clean lines, and brilliant light throughout the whole space, it was a bit of a photographer's playground! It'll be exciting to see how it is used for teaching and collaboration.

A huge congrats to everyone involved in bringing the new University of Bristol campus to life.
