Bulgaria’s communist UFO: The abandoned Buzludzha Monument

On the remote Buzludzha peak in the mountains of Bulgaria stands The Monument House of the Bulgarian Communist Party.

The peak itself was the site of a battle between the Bulgarians and the Turks in 1868. In 1891 a group of socialists lead by Dimitar Blagoev met on the peak to plan for Bulgaria’s socialist future.
To celebrate these events, the government in power during the height of Soviet influence decided to erect a monument commemorating socialist communism.

Built in 1981 by the Bulgarian Communist Party, its circular main hall features nearly 900 square meters of intricate historical mosaics.
The monument perfectly illustrates the legacy of the Soviet era in Bulgaria.

The 900 square meter interior was crafted from millions of colored glass tiles depicting Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Bulgarian socialist history

Above it all blazed a Ruby red star-shaped window at the top of its 70 meter tower in honor of Soviet Russia.

Following the political shifts of 1989, the state locked its doors and walked away.
