There are marriage proposals… and then there are marriage proposals involving a typhoon. 😂

When John decided he was going to propose to Crystal in the Philippines, he'd picked the ring and the date and was determined not to chicken out.

What he hadn't planned for was a gazebo being occupied, a restaurant closing, water coming into another restaurant, gale-force winds turning his umbrella inside out and an increasingly wet, cold and hungry Crystal who JUST WANTED TO GO HOME.
Reader, he persisted. And thank goodness she said yes. 😂

Fast forward to a considerably sunnier Saturday in Stirling and I got to photograph these two getting married at the absolutely stunning Church of the Holy Rude.

There was a surprise piper, guests travelling from near and far, tourists turning into unofficial paparazzi, beautiful light pouring through the stained-glass windows, confetti and a wedding cake that basically told their entire Scotland-meets-the-Philippines love story in fondant.

And all of this was captured on my shortest two-hour wedding package.

411 finished photographs, to be precise.
Because a shorter wedding doesn't mean a smaller story. ❤️

While you're getting married, I'm not only looking at you.
I'm looking behind you.
Beside you.
At your family.
At your friends.
At the person trying not to cry and the person doing something utterly ridiculous in the background. 😂
Because some of the photographs you'll love most won't be photographs you asked for.
They'll be moments you didn't even know happened.
You can't put those on a shot list.
You just need a photographer who's looking for them.

Resistance is futile. 😂
I won't force you to spend half your dog's photoshoot posing for portraits.
But am I going to gently suggest you get into a handful?
Absolutely.
And you know what?
They're very often the photographs people are most grateful they have later.
No posing. No awkward smiling at me.
Just you and your furry little weirdo being exactly who you are together.
Sorry, not sorry.

Who makes up YOUR family?

Four generations of women made up the family in this portrait.
Yours doesn't have to.
It could be Mum, Dad and the kids. Three siblings. Grandparents and grandchildren. All the cousins. Or your family might have four paws and insist on sitting on the sofa. 🐾
My Timeless Generations sessions are back for just two days on 12th & 13th September.

And here's the clever bit...
I don't actually photograph everyone together.
Each person is photographed individually before I carefully combine the images to create one completely unique family portrait.
Which means I don't need three children, Granny and the Labrador to simultaneously look in the right direction. Frankly, that feels like witchcraft even without Photoshop. 😂

Your dog is probably the most photographed member of your household.
Sleeping. Eating. Walking. Being ridiculous. Sitting in a sunbeam. Doing absolutely nothing but somehow still deserving 14 photographs.
But scroll through your camera roll.
How many photographs are there of you together?
That's why I'll always encourage you to step into a few photographs during their session.
Not because you need a perfect portrait of yourself.
Because your relationship with them deserves to be photographed too.

I promise I'm not trying to trick you into a portrait session. 😂
But when you tell me you “only want photographs of the dog”, I'm probably going to persuade you to jump in for a few.
Five minutes.
No posing expertise required.
You don't even have to look at me.
Because the relationship you have with your dog deserves to exist somewhere other than your memories and a handful of slightly questionable selfies.
Just love your dog.
I'll do the photography bit.

🚨🚨Sneak Peek Alert🚨🚨

Stirling was absolutely buzzing yesterday. The sun was shining, people were out in full techno colour for Stirling Pride and in a beautiful ceremony John and Crystal became husband and wife. I can't wait to fully edit this intimate wedding and blog about how they met and John's stormy proposal 😉⛈️ But in the meantime here are some hastily edited sneak peeks to tag and share.

Things parents tell me:
“They never smile for photos.”
And do you know what I don't immediately do?
Stand behind my camera shouting SMIIIIIILE!
Natural expressions don't tend to appear on command.
Especially when you're three and some strange woman has just pointed a massive camera at you.
So we give them time.
We chat.
We play.
We act daft.
I might move on to somebody else entirely.
And then…
There it is.
The actual smile.
Not because we demanded one.
Because something made them smile.
Excellent. Nobody say CHEESE. 😂
