What initially drew my eye to Joel was his classic 40’s-50’s style outfit. He somehow managed to stand out entirely from the modern crowd while fitting in perfectly with the historical aesthetic of Durham.

I recently read a post about how modern street photography is often missing a crucial element of candid life; human connection. It’s so easy to just snap a photo from afar and keep walking, but the real depth comes from actually introducing yourself, meeting people, and learning something about who they are.

Taking a moment to stop and talk to Joel turned a passing visual aesthetic into a genuine exchange.

Yesterday I joined a good friend of mine on a journey through sound and vision. It was a collective event celebrating the music of Sam Fender & the photography genius of Tish Murtha. It was really special to get a deeper insight not only into their collaboration of works after Tish’s passing, but also to understand a little more about the woman who captured a deeply under valued population, the working class. How she captured their lives and was a voice of frustration for the people she lived amongst and got to know through her time.

If you haven’t been to Baltic Gateshead yet to see Tish’s work I truly think you should & take some time to appreciate how special her eye and heart truly was. 🖤🤍 work is also so fascinating and accompanies Tish’s pieces so wonderfully.
