A visitor said last night “We would live here if we could” and it’s not the first time I’ve heard that sentiment.

It made me realise how lucky I’ve been to be able to be in Northumberland and earn a living through my photography and music over the last 18 years. 🙏

Should I be jealous
Of the holidaymaker
Sitting peacefully
With time to spare
While I feel full of busy?
Just a moment’s contemplation
Leads me to conclude;
Let them be
Happy in their time here,
For soon enough
They will return to their busy
While I will still be here
And my busy is all good

A thought for August.

My podcast was a documentary about American author Henry Miller. I walked and listened to tales from the Californian coast where he lived for many years but I was stopped in my tracks by a single quote. “The face of The Earth as The Creator intended it to look”. His view of Big Sur in California was of a seascape untouched by man. Cliffs and beaches, rocks and sand going about their existence of erosion and deposition just the same today as they have for thousands if not millions of years.

I often think, as we wander home from an evening walk leaving an empty beach to the long hours of the night, that however much we appreciate the beauty of nature it's not there for us. It was there before and will be there after: We happen to be around just now and so it falls to us to protect the landscape from those who would do it harm.

An evening wander down to the sea to see what there was to see. A beautiful empty low-tide beach was the answer. Better to sit and contemplate than for photographs but as I wandered back I saw the evening light shining through this fern.
In previous heatwaves I've noticed unseasonable autumn colours and even falling leaves from stressed trees. This fern was obviously struggling a bit in the heat while it's neighbours still carried their summer green.

This morning's sea was very calm with the gentlest of wavelets lapping on the sand. It made me think of more dramatic wave days, and as I was looking through my archives for another project I came across these from September 2016.
