Follow-up blog from this spring’s flying squirrel photography project. How did the spring season go? The cover photo probably gives away the answer — it certainly wasn’t an empty tree I ended up photographing. 🐿️📸

We all have days when we feel a bit bloated and getting going feels difficult, but rarely is the front door itself too narrow.

A few days after this, the flying squirrel moved into a slightly larger tree cavity. I wonder if little ones are on the way? 🐿️💚

Olhava, Repovesi National Park

The traditional early-June weekend was once again spent on the magnificent Olhava cliff in the heart of Repovesi National Park. Sunday treated us to sunshine, but the beginning of the weekend was more or less rainy.

I managed a trad ascent of the route Puntari, and I also got to try the wide crack of Eklipse (6c) for the first time. Maybe I'll give it another go in a year or so — I was still quite a long way from actually enjoying it. 😀

The black-throated divers had already settled down to nest, so opportunities to listen to the birds' commotion were only occasional.

I didn't take many photos, but here are a couple of shots (photos 2 and 3) of me on Eklipse, photographed by Miikka.

The cover photo shows my helmet on the summit.

Let's keep our seas, archipelago, and forests clean! 🌲♻️

An early badger cub. I was really surprised when, a little over a week ago, a small badger cub emerged from the den with its mother right behind it. I have never before seen badger cubs, either live or on trail cameras, before the beginning of june. This time it was still well within may, and the cub was already quite big as well.

It just goes to show how different the years can be.

The 2026 Helsinki Kalamaraton fishing competition has now been completed, and this year we managed to catch 25 different fish species, which was enough for 6th place.

The basic idea of the competition is simple: teams have 24 hours to catch as many different fish species as possible from shore using rod and line, with the fish being legally hooked from the mouth. However, the competition also requires taking into account minimum size limits, protected areas, and fishing restriction zones. The competition area covers the Helsinki region in Finland.

This year, the winning team managed to catch 29 species.

The photos show night fishing, which plays a very important role when aiming for success. During night fishing, fish are visually searched for in shallow shoreline waters using light, often spotting them between rocks. Most of the fish are only a few centimeters long, typically around 4–8 cm.
The next competition in 2027 will be historic, as the event celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Towards next year…

The 2026 (Fish Marathon competition) is approaching!!

Tomorrow, May 16th, teams of 2–3 anglers will once again compete for 24 hours along the shores of Helsinki in the pursuit of as many fish species as possible. The photos in this post are memories from 2016, when Elina photographed me for her project from the shore of her home island while I was practicing catching tiny fish. And when I say tiny, I mean just a few centimeters long. Size doesn’t matter — the species does!

The last photo is from the family album, taken in spring 2021, showing me sleeping on the rocks of sometime on Sunday morning after being awake for more than 24 hours.

In the badger forest, it can sometimes be deathly quiet as you watch the silent sett mounds, waiting for a badger to appear. This time the badger never came out, but the cuckoos entertained me with their courtship calls, cuckooing and vocalizing in the forest. A nice addition to an otherwise quiet woodland!
