I have seen too many women doing these mistakes over the years, and as with health, business headshots discussion is male skewed/dominated space online, so here are my tips for WOMEN how to choose the best professional business headshots. Read on!
Women often gravitate towards choosing a portrait where we look happiest. However, the goal is selecting the photo that shows you powerful and capable.
This attitude might stem from the fact that, too often, women are told their professional image should convey “approachable”, which is just another version of ”you’d be prettier if you smiled”.
“No” is my standard answer to that. A neutral or serious expression conveys authority and focus for women, just as it does for men.
Experience (=wrinkles) and individuality (=imperfections) are assets. Own them.
For men the usual advice is: “Look like someone who gets things done.” That should be genderless advice when choosing your business portraits.
Ask yourself these questions:
1. Which business portrait makes me feel like the best version of myself?
2. Does this image align with how I want to be perceived in my field?
3. Would I trust this person if I saw them on a website or LinkedIn?
Then squint your eyes and see which business headshots communicate all that. Those are usually the winners.
