Deep in the of lives the world’s smallest — the pygmy marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea). Weighing less than a bar of soap (about 100–140 g), these remarkable are often called “finger monkeys” because they’re small enough to perch on your hand! 🐒

🔍 Despite their size, pygmy marmosets are ecological powerhouses. They use sharp, chisel-like teeth to gouge tree bark and sip the sap inside. This unusual diet shapes forest dynamics, creating microhabitats that other species also use.

👨‍👩‍👧 Living in tight-knit family groups, they communicate with high-pitched calls—so high, in fact, that some are ultrasonic, beyond the range of human hearing. This helps them stay coordinated while avoiding predators in the dense canopy.

🌎 Found along the Amazon Basin, including Ecuador, these primates face threats from habitat loss and the illegal pet trade. Protecting their forest homes ensures that these tiny wonders continue to thrive in one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.

🌊✨ Masters of the Sky: Frigatebirds ✨🌊

With wingspans reaching up to 2.3 meters (7.5 feet), are among the most iconic seabirds of the Islands. Unlike most , they can stay aloft for days without landing, riding warm air currents with almost no flapping.

There are two species in the - the Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens) and the Great Frigatebird (Fregata minor). Both species are known for their striking sexual : males inflate bright red throat pouches during courtship displays, while females sport a distinctive white chest patch.

Frigatebirds are not waterproof! Unlike most seabirds, frigatebirds can’t fully waterproof their feathers so they can’t land on water or dive without risking their feathers becoming waterlogged. Instead, they sn**ch fish, squid, and flying fish straight from the ocean surface - or steal them from other seabirds!

They nest in trees on many of the islands. And the babies are pretty damn cute! 🥰

We spotted these on our land tour to North Seymour island last week with .

🦩🌸✨ Galápagos Flamingos ✨🌸🦩

The greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) is the only species found in the ! 🦩 With their vivid pink color (thanks to carotenoid pigments from their diet of tiny crustaceans and algae), these birds thrive in the islands’ salty lagoons.

They’re filter-feeders, using their specialized beaks upside-down to strain food from the water. 👀 Fewer than 500 live in the Galápagos, making them one of the rarest flamingo populations in the world and a fragile part of this unique ecosystem.

Slow and steady wins the race… especially when you’ve been around for over 150 years! Honoured to meet some of the gentle giants of the …the giant . 🐢

We have seen them everyday on the way to the dive and snorkel boats but only from a moving taxi/bus. Today I headed up to the reserve to see these magnificent creatures up close. They are huge, bigger than you can image from pictures.

The Galápagos tortoise is the largest living of tortoise and can live well over 150 years! Each island has its own unique , adapted to its environment. They play a vital role in shaping the by dispersing seeds and creating clearings for new plants to grow. 🍃 🌱

All pictures were taken following the rules of being at least 2 m away from at all times and being accompanied by a naturalist guide 🙂
