‘The flooded Grave’ by Sol Shin () 📸

Sol Shin won last year’s scholarship and enrolled herself on courses at the school 📸

About this series:

“One summer, there was a massive flood. Afterwards, I met someone who believes that art should be recognised as labour, even in a capitalist society. Despite this belief, she was so poor that she couldn’t afford to pay her rent. Despite her frail appearance, she dances, acts and paints. We took a walk to Han River Citizens’ Park near her house. She was the one who suggested it.

‘There used to be a lot of trees here,’ she said. Was it last summer? It rained so much that the whole place flooded. All but two of the trees died.”
‘I remember that, too. It used to be a dense forest, but now it’s been completely destroyed.”
‘All the trees along the road were slightly bent. Maybe that’s why, or maybe their roots just weren’t deep enough. They were all swept away.”
‘We’re standing on the graves of trees.’

There was no one else around, but I could hear water rushing somewhere nearby. The wind was strong. ‘I want to move like a tree swaying in the wind,’ she said, and began to dance. Her thin arms swayed slowly alongside the half-bent bough.

She hugged the tree. The sobbing grew more and more distant.” (By Sol shin: https://solshin.com/The-Flooded-Grave-1).

📚A huge book recommendation: ‘Sand. The Transformation of Berlin’ by ._lange

…a long-term documentary project that explores the urban transformation of Berlin. Many of the city’s characteristic brownlands and provisional buildings have disappeared in recent years and been replaced by new developments. Michael Lange’s work focuses on building sites in the usually short phase after the demolition of the old and before the construction of the new. They describe places where the ground has just been cleared and where excavation has just begun.

The book (2023) includes photographs from 2017-2022; the latest phase of the city’s redevelopment.

The title of the project refers to the fact that sand comes to the surface at the beginning of the construction process. Berlin lies in a glacial valley from the last Ice Age, so there is a lot of sand underground.

The images provide insights into the urban fabric that are usually no longer possible today. They reflect the urban context in which the buildings are being erected. With regards to the rising property prices and the growing housing shortage, the question arises as to who is constructing what for whom.

We highly recommend you to 👀 through the book and explore these fascinating transformations!
