Day 3 - Kykkos Monastery

The Holy Monastery of the Virgin of Kykkos was founded around the end of the 11th century by the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos (1081–1118). A Week in Cyprus

Day 2 - One of Many

I just love Palm trees which are somewhat rare in the UK apart from some areas in the south-west like Cornwall. It’s probably because I associate them with warm sunny weather too and this is just one of many along the seafront in Paphos, although of course, there are thousands across parts of the island.

A Week in Cyprus

Day 2 - Paphos Castle

Paphos Castle is located at the western end of the city port. It was originally a Byzantine fortress built to protect the port. The original Byzantine fortress was destroyed in the earthquake of 1222. It was rebuilt and expanded by the Lusignans in the 13th century.

In 1878, with the arrival of the British, the Castle ceased to be used for military purposes and became a salt depot until 1935, when it was declared an ancient monument under the Antiquities Act. Since then it represents one of the most characteristic landmarks of the city of Paphos.

A Week in Cyprus

Day 2 - Church of Agion Anargyron

The Church of Agion Anargyron in Paphos, is one of the 79 monasteries on the island. Built in 1649, the church stands on the site of a prehistoric settlement. Local legends say the monastery was founded by two brothers, Saints Cosmas & Damianos, who devoted their lives to caring for the sick and dying. Notably, these charismatic & selfless monks were the only ones on the island who didn’t charge for their services – hence the monastery’s name, which means “without payment” in Greek.

A Week in Cyprus

Day 1 - Late Night Arrival - certain parts of our hotel were in nicely lit up in a variety of colours that kept changing from pinks and purples to light and dark blues. I only captured the pinks and purples which I found the most effective.
