Tina Grant brings the heat every photo shoot!

I have been doing Headshots for Tina for 15 years. I have loved watching her acting career evolve. Every time I see her on TV or every time I hear her voice in a video game. I’m just so pumped to see her succeed.

This headshot was different though. We wanted to show more of her talents in this photo.

She made that jacket from hand. She designed it, she sewed it, she picked the fabrics, and she is an amazing stylist and wardrobe designer.

As a headshot Photographer based in Vancouver, I get to follow so many different people’s career and I am so pumped when I see people succeed and reached new milestones.

if you’re not already, make sure to follow Tina and that way when she makes a big time either as an actress for a fashion designer or a writer director, you can be one of those people that say, I followed her before she made a big time.

Breaking the rules with Aaron Janes

during my headshot photo session with Aaron, we did the typical headshot photos that he needed for his business. Once we captured all the headshot photos that he needed we were able to experiment and get some additional images that he can use for his marketing collateral.

I called the 9010 where I spent 90% of the time getting exactly what the client needs and then 10% of the time playing around and getting some unique angles and lighting that we didn’t necessarily plan on. Sometimes when you do some experimenting and some playing around that’s where the magic happens.

Why does this photo break all the rules and why do I love it?

The angle of this headshot photo is much lower of an angle than I would typically use. I typically shoot all my headshot photos at high-level so that whoever is looking at your headshot will see you as an equal.

I often get people asking for a heads up from a high angle because it looks flattering, but if I photograph your headshot from a high angle, everybody who sees you is going to be looking down at you and subconsciously, looking at you as lesser than. Something I never want.

Reversely, shooting from a lower angle, makes you seem larger than life and very important. Think of your favourite band or musician, they’re up on the stage. They’re larger than life and people idolize them. Or in a movie specifically a good guy versus bad guy type movie the villain at the start of the film is shot from a very low angle, cause they’re big and scary and the hero is shot from a high angle because they’re small and you don’t know if there will be able to defeat the villain by the end of the film the hero is Victoria’s and filmed from a low angle because they’re so powerful and they defeated the bad guy while the bad guy is films from a high angle because they’re dead and small and no longer scary.

The other factor of this headshot photo that completely breaks the rule is Aaron is not looking at the camera. For that reason, I wouldn’t use this photo as your LinkedIn headshot profile photo. I would use it as a secondary marketing material that helps show another angle of Aarons story.

What makes a good headshot photo?

Photography is much more dynamic than what meets the eye.

Your headshot photo communicates a story about who you are and what you’re about. There are many things that communicate your story within a photo.

Your eyes communicate confidence. If your eyes are wide open, and your eyebrows are up and communicates surprise. If you’re advertising a comedy show that maybe has a lot of surprises like props and other surprising elements maybe you want to have a headshot that communicates surprise. Typically in peoples Headshots they want to communicate confidence. Confidence that they can complete a job successfully. Confidence that they can solve a customers problems.

Your mouth communicates approachability. How easy you are to work with and how likely it is somebody would like to work with you. If you’re smiling too big people may not take you seriously because you could come across as a jokester.

What to wear for your headshot photo session is also important. Wardrobe plays a huge role in communication. I particularly like this photo because of Andy’s green shirt. Our skin tone is red and so green is the complementary colour of red and typically looks really good on people. In Photoshop, I made the background the same tint as his shirt creating a monochromatic effect. This creates harmony within the image, but also brings our eyes to Andy’s face. That’s exactly what you want in headshot is to see the person and not the wardrobe or jewelry, etc..

Body language in your headshot photos is huge for communication. Especially in a waste of Photo like this compared to a shoulders up typical corporate headshot that I photograph.

Lighting in headshot photography is also super important to communicate your story. You can communicate mystery by adding shadow or you can communicate clear transparency by having a well lit image.

All of these fine details is actually where I geek out on and really love my job as a headshot photographer in Vancouver.

What background is the best background for a corporate headshot?

I think a solid colour background is essential for individuals and businesses because it’s the most versatile.

I saw the colour background is the easiest to replicate, globally and anytime of the day. So if your team grows and you add new members, we are able to get the exact same shot and match your branding.

A solid colour background is also a great option for Headshots because you can easily take the background out and put whatever you want in the background.

If you’re doing a PowerPoint or printed materials like tradeshow banners, you can extend the background as far as you want.

I also love doing environmental portraits and they’re fantastic and really great for a lot of marketing but I think the first piece of marketing collateral you should have is a solid colour back job for your corporate headshot.

Heads up photography is for everybody!

I often do large corporate teams, and sometimes clients only photograph the managers or C suite executives.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but but there is a lot of opportunity for marketing if everybody has their headshot photographed.

If you’re in a company and they’re asking you to take Headshots, this is an amazing opportunity for you and even if you don’t feel like having your headshot photos taken, I recommend stepping out of your comfort zone and doing anyway. I guarantee you if you have your Headshots photographed by me that we will have a great time and you’ll learn something and probably end up with an amazing photo that you can share with your friends and family for generations.

This is one of my all-time photos that I’ve taken recently of a gentleman who did not want to have his photo taken, but I was able to capture his amazing soul

What to wear for your headshot session?

Choosing what wardrobe to wear for your headshot session is actually pretty simple and most people overthink it.

My number one rule is “ wear what you would wear to work!”

It is a big mistake to overdress. Often, sometimes I see people wear a suit and tie when in fact, they don’t wear a suit and tie at work.

If you do wear a suit and tie to work, absolutely wear a suit and tie for your headshot session!

My second rule is the authentic to yourself.

If you feel good in what you’re wearing, and you feel confident in what you’re wearing for your headshot photo session you’re going to have a way better shot at feeling awesome in the photos and liking your photos as well as attracting the ideal clientele or career with your Headshots.

People often worry about if their wardrobe is dark in colour and the background is darken color, will it ruin the headshot?

Based on this photo, what do you think?

I personally love a monochromatic colour scheme. We have a black suit with black framed glasses and he has black hair against a dark gray background and I think this is my favourite look of all time.

Do casting directors and corporate recruiters actually prefer colour over black-and-white?

tag your favorite, casting Director in this post because I would love their opinion and to create a conversation to educate people on whether black-and-white Headshots are acceptable.

This is a massive topic of debate, especially in acting and corporate hiring circles. Users frequently ask if choosing black-and-white will hurt their chances of getting noticed, with many pointing out that while black-and-white is artistic, colour is often preferred because it accurately shows skin tone, eye colour, and hair colour.

I myself probably think photos like these are secondary, but extremely powerful to show off your range and your ability to capture somebody’s attention while stripping the colour from a photo

Black-and-white Headshots and black-and-white portraits like these are very editorial and very dynamic because of the high contrast and high key lighting.

These photos in specific, I am using a wide angle lens instead of a typical portrait lens that I would use for Headshots.

At the end of the day, you have to use anything in your power to stand out from the crowd and show that you were the right person for the job.

Acting Headshots versus corporate Headshots. It doesn’t really matter because you’re trying to do the same thing. Show the world who you are and what you’re capable of.

But I also find interesting is that through evolution over millions of millions of years our eyes gravitate towards contrast. This was a survival technique because you would want to see a predator coming and that’s why camouflage is very difficult is there’s not much contrast and you can’t see the potential danger. Naturally, our eyes lock onto something that has a lot of contrast.

That is why I think a high contrast high key black-and-white image is a really great idea. The only is the lighting very high contrast, but my camera settings also create a real crispness to the photos, but we intentionally also wore a dark wardrobe in front of the light background.

Please let me know your thoughts on whether you think a black-and-white headshot is a good idea.

Student nights and job fairs are the perfect opportunity for a headshot booth.

Student students and people are looking for jobs. Need Headshots more than anybody.

One of my favourite parts of my job is educating people what their headshot says about them. If you’re smiling way too big and maybe even laughing people may not take you seriously. So maybe depending on the role you want to get, you want to bring out your serious side.

If you are super young, you may want to look more confident and serious to prove to people that you are actually capable of doing your job.

But don’t worry because I teach you on the spot how to pose and bring up the expressions that will give you the best headshot photo for your goals.

I walk people through this on the spot and help them choose the right headshot for what they want to achieve.

This is behind the scenes video of my headshot Photo Booth at the CIM student night. This was an amazing opportunity for students and industry professionals to get together and network.

Thanks to FLS for providing a free headshot to anybody at the event who wanted one and I think that’s absolutely amazing.!
