Found this gem paddling on Lake Athabasca last fall.

MacDonald point. Named after Sapper (14 Field Co., Royal Canadian Engineers) Angus Lorne Macdonald (b.1918) of Earl Grey died 1944 December 25 of his injuries and is buried at Villanova Canadian war cemetery, Bagnacavallo, Ravenna, Italy.

One of the “Seven Sisters” or also known as Kopka Falls on the Kopka River in northwestern Ontario. Here the river drops 76m in the distance of 1600 meters of travel. The beauty of the area is outstanding aside from some steep portages. Here I included a photo of me taking the photo.

The best sunset from my summers canoe expedition. Camped here on Waterhouse lake in Kopka River provincial park in northwestern Ontario when this amazing sunset developed and changed so much over a hour.

Word of the day!

Nemophilist (n.)

Meaning: A haunter of the woods; a person who finds peace and joy among trees.
Origin: From the ancient Greek word nemos (meaning a wooded glade or grove) combined with -philist (a lover of).
Example Usage: “A true nemophilist, she felt more at home under the canopy of ancient trees than in crowded rooms.”

Not to overshadow the amazing canoe expedition, but the expedition ended a little early as we found ourselves nearly surrounded by a massive wildfire. We literally had to use head lamps to find a portage trail or read the maps because how dark the wildfire smoke made it. As we raced to reach a road access where we could be emergency evac’ed by the Ontario Provincial Police, the sky became a dark red with limited visibility… the concern was we could hear the fire roaring but because of limited visibility we couldn’t see it.

Sneak preview of the photos from my recent canoe expedition on the Kopka River in Northwest Ontario. To say it almost ended in disaster is a understatement. Wild fires are no joke…but prior to the north exploding into flames I was able to share a moment with this family of eagles.

Not a common way to access canoe expeditions on the prairies. But it’s an effective way to access northern Ontario rivers. Would have been nice if the tornados and massive rain fall waited till we loaded the train.

I’ll be away for the next nearly 3 weeks. Hopefully I’ll have plenty of new photographs to share with everyone.

“The human spirit needs places where nature has not been rearranged by the hands of man”

I’m beginning to really look forward to exploring rarely travelled routes in search of places that bring calm to myself. Here we came to a shoreline that had been burnt by fire erasing any trace of the old portage that once led paddlers to another waterway. Only a few more months then paddle seasons begins.
