Not to overshadow the amazing canoe expedition, but the expedition ended a little early as we found ourselves nearly surrounded by a massive wildfire. We literally had to use head lamps to find a portage trail or read the maps because how dark the wildfire smoke made it. As we raced to reach a road access where we could be emergency evac’ed by the Ontario Provincial Police, the sky became a dark red with limited visibility… the concern was we could hear the fire roaring but because of limited visibility we couldn’t see it.

Sneak preview of the photos from my recent canoe expedition on the Kopka River in Northwest Ontario. To say it almost ended in disaster is a understatement. Wild fires are no joke…but prior to the north exploding into flames I was able to share a moment with this family of eagles.

Not a common way to access canoe expeditions on the prairies. But it’s an effective way to access northern Ontario river...

Not a common way to access canoe expeditions on the prairies. But it’s an effective way to access northern Ontario rivers. Would have been nice if the tornados and massive rain fall waited till we loaded the train.

I’ll be away for the next nearly 3 weeks. Hopefully I’ll have plenty of new photographs to share with everyone.

“The human spirit needs places where nature has not been rearranged by the hands of man”

I’m beginning to really look forward to exploring rarely travelled routes in search of places that bring calm to myself. Here we came to a shoreline that had been burnt by fire erasing any trace of the old portage that once led paddlers to another waterway. Only a few more months then paddle seasons begins.

Starting to look forward to morning coffee with views like this during canoe expeditions. This view is from Stauffer Lake. Located one to two days travel north of Otter lake. The nice part of this lake is most of it hasn’t burned recently which’s makes camping more enjoyable, especially since much of the region has burned in forest fires in the last several years.

Additionally I look forward to finding more relaxing views like this, this upcoming year. This is Manitou Falls, on the Fond Du Lac River… one of the best locations I’ve come across for a rest day on a canoe expedition.

I wasn’t in a big rush on my last drive back from northern Saskatchewan so I decided to pull over and explore a small waterfall that I had driven past dozens of times. This here is part of Smith falls located just off the road near Brabant community. I was surprised when the bugs were a little bad near the end of September. So many little treasures the provinces has when you slow down a little.

Here is McDonald Falls on the Smith River. Located just north of lake Athabasca. Found these falls during some very low water but interestingly these falls were named after Able Seaman Ronald Joseph McDonald. Was killed in action in 1943 after his ship was sunk in the Mediterranean Sea. These falls are just one of nearly 4000 geographical features in Saskatchewan named after Saskatchewan veterans.

In continuing with geographical features named after veterans in Saskatchewan. Here is Storozuk Lake. Located just north of Lake Athabasca and very close to the Grease River. Absolutely stunning views when I travelled here in the mid September. Colours were so vibrant I had trouble believing what lay in front of me. Named after Sapper Michael Storozuk of the Royal Canadian Engineers 7 Field Coy. Killed in action 26 Aug 1944. This lake is one of near 4000 geographical features named after veterans in Saskatchewan.

Paddling along the Smith River back in September. Named after veteran Sapper Leslie George Smith, a combat engineer with the Royal Canadian Engineers. Originally from Leask, Saskatchewan. Nearly 4000 geographical features in Saskatchewan are named after Veterans that didn’t make it home from their deployments.
