I've been thinking a lot lately about how quickly time passes with our dogs.

The grey muzzles seem to appear overnight, the walks get a little slower, and suddenly the moments you once took for granted become the ones you wish you could hold onto forever.

I'd love to gift one special senior dog and their person a photography session.

G R I M

People ask his name and I always say

Grim. They look perplexed so I follow up

“My future is Grim”

Every dog shows you another side of yourself.

After years of fostering I felt like I was constantly beating myself up. Trying to push to the hardest challenge. I couldn’t give myself a break. Each challenging dog I wondered….. could this be the one?

In life I have a history of doing this.

With people, hobbies and work. I go hard at things, I wear myself out.

That need to punish comes from somewhere pretty deep that I’m sure some of you can relate to.

But here we are, Grim & I

I chose him to challenge me in a way I thought I needed. But, as is the way of dogs, he showed up and taught me to let that $hit go.

Instead of a crazy sport dog, he’s been calm, grounding, peaceful …. Powerful and soulful in his own way.

He’s had me walking away from things I thought would work, and then realized - this doesn’t serve me. Wait. It doesn’t serve ‘us’.

Grim. My promise to you is to never hope for the dog you aren’t or just can’t be. To love you as you are for who you are, so I can learn the same for me 🖤

I showed up to this session thinking I was meeting total strangers. Then they stepped out of the car with their dog and it took me a second to realize… wait, I know you guys.

The biggest smiles. The biggest hugs. Somehow the booking name just never clicked in my brain beforehand.

I’d only met her once before, but knew him through skateboarding connections over the years, and the second I realized who they were, I knew this was going to be a good session.

Some couples just have this way of existing together that you can feel even later while editing. Not forced. Not performative. Just natural. The way they gravitated toward each other without thinking. The way he could make her laugh so hard she’d throw her head back and completely forget the camera was even there.

They showed up in the coolest outfits that suited them perfectly, with their hilarious zippy little dog who honestly felt like an extension of them both. Every photo feels full of personality and warmth.

And by the end of it, I honestly didn’t want to leave. Some people are just genuinely good to be around and these two are exactly that. I really hope that feeling lives inside these photos too.

Dogs have this way of pulling people back together.
Back into the moment.
Back into laughter.
Back into each other.

They sit between two people on the couch
and somehow close the distance neither knew was growing.

They make you go outside when you’d rather hide.

They give you something to care for
on the days you forget to care for yourself.

They are the glue.

The soft place the hard days landed.

Sometimes love looks like grand gestures.

And sometimes it looks like two people holding their dogs 🥹❤️

He has that look—like he knows something the rest of us don’t.

We all sat in the grass and you told me story after story, laughing the whole way through. All the things he gets into. All the times he somehow made it through situations where he really had no business coming out on top.

And yet—here he is.

Still curious. Still completely himself. Still showing up like it’s just another ordinary day.

There’s something about dogs like him. A little scrappy, a little unbothered, and somehow impossible to take down.

This didn’t feel heavy. It felt easy. Like being let in on a lifetime of inside jokes.

This is just one small part of your session. There’s so much more of him—and all of you together—that I’ll be sharing soon.

But this… this version of him… it felt like I needed to make it a priority 🥹❤️

There’s something really special about photographing people whose whole story began with their dogs.

At the start, there’s always that little bit of nerves… not quite sure where to stand, what to do with their hands, how it will all feel. And then slowly, almost without noticing, something shifts.

We wandered through the woods, letting the dogs lead the way, pausing for moments that didn’t feel staged or planned. Just real. The more they settled into themselves, the more everything softened. The space between them got smaller. Their laughter came easier. Their connection deepened right in front of me.

By the end, it didn’t feel like a photoshoot anymore. It felt like I was quietly witnessing something honest.

The way they look at each other… the way they move together… the way they trust each other so gently—it’s rare to see something that natural on camera. Nothing forced. Nothing performed. Just love, exactly as it is.

And their dogs, right there in the middle of it all, like they always have been. 🤍

Okay I don’t even know how to properly put this one into words without it sounding cheesy but I’m going try anyway ❤️

Every once in a while I open my books for family sessions, and it’s really only when it feels right… like when I know the feeling is going to be relaxed and real and not super posed and stiff.

This was one of those.

I walked into their home and instantly felt like… oh, this is gonna be good. It was warm, dinner was being prepped, everything smelled amazing, people were coming and going, hugging, chatting—just full family energy in the best way.

And right in the middle of it all was Nana. Honestly the sweetest human. The kind of person you can just *feel* everyone loves. And her senior dog (who I obviously bonded with immediately) just quietly part of everything, taking it all in.

I kind of just floated around like a quiet little paparazzi, generations standing side by side.

We did all the combos—big group shots, smaller family units, different generations, dogs in, dogs out, a bit of everything. But none of it felt forced. It just felt like them.

People usually come to me for dog photos (which will always be my thing), but sessions like this remind me why I *sometimes* say yes to families. When it’s like this—easy, connected, a little chaotic in a good way—it turns into something really special.

Also… the weather?? The yard?? It was like they live in a little slice of magic.

I left feeling like I’d just been invited into something really personal, which is not something I ever take lightly.

This one just meant a lot.

And I’m kinda hoping they’ll have me back one day 🤍

like they already knew forever.

I met them in a quiet spot,
cherry blossoms just starting.

Nothing big happened—
just small laughs,
little pauses,
them standing a bit closer than they had to.

I remember thinking,
“they’re really sweet together.”

But I didn’t get it yet.
Later, going through their photos,
I saw it.

The way they look at each other
when they think no one’s paying attention.

The tiny smiles.
The quick kisses.

How easy it all is.
It’s always the stuff I miss
while I’m shooting.

Things have been a bit slow lately,
and I didn’t realize how much I needed this session
until I was sitting there editing it.

It made me feel something again.

I know people come to me for dogs—
and I love that—
but this kind of connection matters just as much to me.

The quiet kind.
The real kind.

The kind you don’t notice right away…
until you really look.
