For 71 years, this was the tallest building in St. John’s. 🍁🎥

Rising above Patrick Street in the west end, St. Patrick’s Church is one of the city’s finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture. Construction officially kicked off in 1864, when local parishioners excavated the site by hand and hauled 600 tons of local bluestone from the Southside Hills in just seven days to build the foundation. Following years of delays, the cut-stone church was officially consecrated in 1881.

From 1888 until 1959, St. Patrick’s stood as the tallest building in St. John’s, crowned by a massive spire that continues to dominate the skyline. Designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1990, the building served as a community cornerstone for generations until permanently closing its doors as an active parish in 2022.

The town from BELOW on Netflix! 🎥

Last weekend I got out to Brigus South, or as viewers may know it, Calvin Penney’s hometown of Snook’s Arm from BELOW. 🐙🎬

Brigus South was one of the main filming locations for the show, where they actually built pieces of their set—like Linda’s and the Church—around the exteriors of real homes in the town.

This beautiful town is roughly an hour’s drive south of St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, as part of the Irish Loop. It is well worth a visit!

Just beware of Mudder. 🐙

Navigating the narrows 🎥

One of the best things to do in St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador has to be watching large ships cruise right past the battery and through “The Narrows”. 🤯

The Narrows is the only ocean entrance into the harbour, flanked by naturally steep cliffs, this tight channel actually shrinks down to roughly 200 feet at its narrowest point.

Seeing any decent-sized ship line up that cut and slide right past the shoreline houses really puts the scale into perspective, showing you just how little room there actually is to manoeuvre.

This ship you see here is the Skandi Cutter and it’s actually super small compared to some of the ships that have navigated the narrows over the years. It is 80.2 meters (approximately 263 feet) long and 22 meters wide (72 feet)

The largest ship to navigate the Narrows into St. John’s Harbour was a cruise ship called the Sky Princess.
Measuring 330 metres (1,083 feet) in length, 19 storeys tall, and 47 meters (154 feet) wide.

The colours of Jellybean row really stand out in the fall 😍🍁🎥

Jelly bean row is the nickname for the brightly coloured Victorian row houses scattered throughout downtown St. John’s, Newfoundland. You can spot the best examples along steep hills like Gower Street, Holloway Street, and Circular Road. These narrow, three-storey wooden homes were mostly built after the Great Fire of 1892 destroyed much of the city. The sharp contrast between the vibrant green, red, blue, and yellow siding makes each connected property stand out along the steep coastal terrain.

Local folklore says fishermen originally painted their houses in bold shades so they could see them from the harbour through thick fog. In reality, the Heritage Foundation started the trend in the late 1970s to revitalize the downtown core and boost local pride during a push to preserve historic architecture. Before this project, most houses in the area were painted plain white or dull pastel shades. Today, these vibrant streets are a signature symbol of Newfoundland culture and one of the most photographed spots in the province.
