Sometimes life feels overwhelming, and when it does, I tend to turn inward so intensely that it can take over everything.

One of the best ways I’ve found to stop my OCD from steering the whole day, week, or year is to give my brain somewhere else to go.

Art gives the chaos a shape.

This morning, that shape was David Bowie with a little Cyndi Lauper hiding in the corners, although Bowie definitely took the wheel.

I didn’t need a perfect plan. I just needed colour, light, expression, and something strange enough to pull me out of my own head for a while.

Self-portraiture has become one of the ways I process things I don’t always know how to explain. It lets me turn the intensity into something I can actually look at.

Today, this is what came out.

I’ve been loving bringing fresh flowers into the studio lately, letting nature become part of the set itself.

Even though Jazba and I spent most of our shoot creating more dramatic, cinematic portraits, we carved out five quiet minutes for a simple actor headshot… and somehow it ended up being one of my favourites from the day.

There’s something so grounded and effortless about this one. Strong, warm, expressive. The kind of portrait that feels like a real person behind the eyes.

Jazba is wildly multi-talented. She did her own hair and makeup for the shoot, writes her own films, and is constantly creating, travelling, and pushing herself toward bigger things between Ottawa, Toronto, and beyond. Truly such an inspiring person to photograph and collaborate with. ✨

Some shoots just feel like sunshine from beginning to end and this was definitely one of them. 🌸✨

Jazba came over before her big move to Toronto and somehow we discovered we basically live three minutes away from each other. Meanwhile we managed to fit SIX different looks into three hours while laughing and creating the entire time.

This set is part of my floral-inspired series, this time infused with an Indian fashion aesthetic using gorgeous jasmine accessories from Jazba’s mom. I love finding different ways to reinvent flowers within this series and this one felt especially beautiful to create. The details, the textures, the jewellery, the softness of the florals mixed with the richness of Indian fashion… honestly a dream to photograph.

Indian fashion has always fascinated me artistically. The colours, fabrics, embellishments and overall elegance feel so cinematic and expressive. I felt so creatively inspired the entire shoot.

And can we talk about how stunning Jazba is? Effortlessly photogenic, expressive, warm, and so much fun to work with. She’s also a professional makeup artist, actor, and model and did her own hair and makeup for the shoot which makes this even more impressive because she absolutely nailed every single look. 🌼

Spring Wandering with Cameras | Creative Portraits with Neil Coleman

Earlier this spring, I met up with my friend Neil, a fellow photographer based in Ottawa, for an afternoon of wandering downtown with our cameras. Neil is well known for his natural light photography, especially his bird and nature photography, but he also photographs portraits throughout the Ottawa area as well. We decided to reconnect after the long Canadian winter and simply create for the fun of it without overthinking concepts, mood boards, or expectations....

Spring feels even sweeter when you slow down enough to really soak it in. 🌸✨

Working with Mariana is always such a fun experience. We’ve now worked together twice, and both shoots have left me with not only beautiful photos, but genuinely great memories as well. She has such a natural elegance in front of the camera, and the movement from the wind through her hair brought this entire set to life perfectly. The orange lily paired so beautifully with the warm accents in her floral dress, creating something that felt vibrant, feminine, and completely wrapped in the energy of spring.

I’ve been loving creating these spring-inspired shoots lately. There’s something really special about capturing the season while it’s here, fully embracing the colours, warmth, flowers, and fleeting beauty before it disappears again for another Canadian winter. I want to feel like I truly experienced it, not just watched it pass by. 🌿🧡
