Some new images from a summer collaboration with London’s studioshaw:

Bridge House is a multi-family housing project set along the Hertford Union Canal in Hackney Wick, on the site of a former waste management plant. Emerging as part of the 2012 Olympic Games legacy, the development brings together 40 dual-aspect apartments—each with its own balcony—and access to a shared roof garden.

At ground level, a gallery, workshops, and café open onto a sequence of public spaces that connect the building to the canal.

Studies Abroad: Berlin, A City in Film

Siemensstadt, Berlin, a residential estate designed in the late 1920’s by a collective of architects - Walter Gropius, Hans Scharoun, Otto Bartning and Hugo Häring - for families of workers employed at the nearby Siemens plants.

Visiting with a group of students from the University of Toronto’s Daniels Faculty of Architecture U of T Daniels Faculty, we found inspiration for today’s challenges for modern urban development, and in particular how to make affordable housing with an enduring sense of place and neighbourhood, with generous open green public spaces.

The estate is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Studies Abroad: Berlin, A City in Film •

I’ve been out on a series of photography workshops in Berlin this week, with a terrific group of students from the University of Toronto John H Daniels Faculty of Architecture U of T Daniels Faculty •

We’ve been exploring new techniques, and thinking about how to slow down with the camera to make more thoughtful and purposeful photographs in the city.

Studies Abroad: Berlin.A City in Film •
First evening of a week long collaboration in Berlin with Peter Sealy and The John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, The University of Toronto.

I’m here this week with the participating Daniels Faculty students to think about representations of Berlin in film and photography, and how these two art forms have shaped our understanding and imagination of this great city.
I’ll be hosting a series of location photography workshops throughout the week, exploring the relationship between photography, architecture and the built spaces around us.

Our week began last night at a salon of analogue films presented in the intimate setting of a private apartment, curated by filmmaker Christian Flemm.

Veil House, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is one of two projects designed by that city’s 5468796 Architecture to win a 2026 Canada Governor General Award for Architecture.

Set in a traditional suburb, Veil House is wrapped in a cloak of perforated core-ten steel offering privacy while gently filtering light.
