One of those mornings where getting up early actually pays off.

I took this while cross-country skiing in the Jura above Geneva. The entire valley had disappeared underneath a sea of clouds, while the Alps were catching the first warm light of the day.

Conditions like this happen when colder air gets trapped down in the valley beneath warmer air above, it’s a temperature inversion. From Geneva it can just look like a grey, cloudy winter morning. Get high enough, though, and this is what can be waiting above it.

Definitely one of my favourite things about winter in this part of Switzerland.

Fresh snow, blue skies, quiet trails, and the Alps sitting above the clouds in the distance. One of those winter days that was hard to make look bad.

There’s something about a path disappearing into the woods that makes it almost impossible not to follow.

These are the grounds of Voltaire’s château in Ferney-Voltaire, France where he spent the last two decades of his life. Beyond the château itself, the estate is filled with old tree-lined paths, moss-covered branches and long avenues that suddenly open up to views of the house.

It’s the kind of place where wandering without much of a plan is probably the best way to see it.

And considering some of these paths were being walked more than 250 years ago, you can’t help wondering how much thinking happened under these same trees.

Standing where Voltaire spent the last twenty years of his life, it’s easy to understand why he chose Ferney. From this estate, just steps from the Swiss border, he wrote, welcomed Europe’s greatest thinkers, defended victims of injustice, and helped transform a quiet village into a thriving community. Today, the château remains remarkably preserved as a place where history, architecture, and the ideas of the Enlightenment still feel very much alive.

Autumn in Val-David is like the feeling of slowing down. Walking these quiet forest trails, every turn revealed another scene where golden maples glowed in the sunlight, dark trunks framed the forest, and a carpet of fallen leaves softened every step. Some sections opened into warm, backlit clearings, while others narrowed into winding paths that disappeared into the woods, making you wonder what was waiting around the next corner.

One of my favorite moments was following a simple trail as it curved between the trees. There wasn’t a dramatic overlook or famous viewpoint, just the quiet beauty of the Laurentian forest at its peak.

Val-David is one of my favorite places to visit during the fall. The colors were close to their peak, and the view from this overlook was worth the hike. From here you can see a small lake surrounded by rolling hills covered in maple, birch, and evergreen trees, creating an incredible mix of colors. It’s a great reminder of how beautiful autumn is in Quebec and why it’s one of the best times of the year to get outside and explore.

Autumn at Mont Orford.

The day started in the fog. Entire sections of the mountain were hidden behind a veil of mist, with only a few orange trees glowing through the grey. As the clouds slowly lifted, the forest revealed itself: winding roads disappearing into the hills, rocky trails covered in fallen leaves, stands of evergreens mixed with brilliant yellows and deep reds, and occasional openings that looked out across endless layers of colourful forest.

Some moments felt expansive, with views stretching for kilometres across the Eastern Townships. Others felt intimate, deep inside the woods beneath a canopy of maple leaves lit by the morning sun.

What stood out most was the contrast. Dark spruce trees against bright autumn colours. Fog against sunlight. Quiet forest paths giving way to panoramic overlooks. Every section of the mountain seemed to have its own mood.

A few hours on the trails at Mont Orford, and it felt like walking through every version of autumn in a single day.

One thing that surprised me about Cusco wasn’t the famous landmarks but it was the craftsmanship hidden in everyday details.

Walking through churches, courtyards, doorways, and ancient stone walls, I kept noticing the same thing: an incredible attention to proportion, symmetry, and permanence. Whether built by the Incas or later by the Spanish, many of these structures were designed centuries ago and still feel intentional today.

Travel often pushes us to chase the big landmarks. Cusco reminded me that some of the most memorable moments come from slowing down and noticing the details between them.

One final sunset over Peru’s Sacred Valley. As the light faded behind the Andes, the valley slowly disappeared into shadow, ending another unforgettable day in one of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever explored.
