There’s something special about those cool late-summer mornings.

When that crisp morning air meets the warmth of the rising sun, it can create some incredible atmosphere—mist hanging over the landscape, golden light breaking through, and wildlife moving through it all.

These are the mornings that make getting up before daylight completely worth it.

As daylight broke, I was greeted by a thick, heavy fog and the sounds of the marsh coming alive—morning birds chirping, bullfrogs calling, and somewhere out in the fog…the unmistakable sound of a moose feeding in the water.

I pushed off in my kayak, barely able to see anything through the fog, and simply followed the sound.

If you’ve ever spent time around moose feeding in the water, you know just how noisy they can be. The splashing, chewing and pulling of aquatic plants often gives them away long before you ever catch your first glimpse.

I always enjoy exploring new moose territory… or maybe I should say, I enjoy the challenge of finding their territory.

After spending a few hours e-scouting on Google Earth and the onX Hunt app, I picked out a new area to explore this morning. With the recent heat, I knew it was going to be crucial to get there as dawn broke.

Over the years, I’ve also noticed that calm winds can really help get moose up and active. Yesterday was very calm, the wind stayed light through the night, and this morning remained cloudy—all conditions that can help keep moose out in the open a little longer before they disappear back into the cover, especially during these hot summer days.

Thankfully, the scouting paid off.

This morning was a success, and I was able to locate some promising new moose territory. Every new area you learn adds another piece to the puzzle, and this one could come in handy in a few weeks when a few clients arrive hoping to photograph and experience New Brunswick moose for themselves.

Finding moose is rarely about luck alone. It’s about studying the terrain, understanding the conditions, putting in the time, and being there when everything comes together.

The greatest lessons in wildlife photography don't come from pressing the shutter... they come from simply watching.

People often ask why I spend so much time searching for moose. The answer is simple: every hour spent observing teaches me something new.

The best moments happen when a moose has no idea you're there. You get to witness natural behavior that most people never see—how they feed, how they use the wind, how they react to sounds, communicate with other moose, and move through their habitat. Those quiet observations are what make me a better wildlife photographer, tracker, and guide.

Finding a moose is exciting. Understanding a moose is what keeps me coming back.

The heat of summer can make finding moose feel almost impossible.

When temperatures climb, moose retreat deep into the thickest forests they can find. Dense spruce stands and shady lowlands provide relief from the heat while helping them escape relentless mosquitoes, black flies, and horseflies. During the hottest parts of the day, they're often bedded down, conserving energy and waiting for the cooler hours of early morning and late evening before moving out to feed.

So if you've been searching for moose and coming up empty, don't give up. They're still out there—you just have to think like a moose. The cooler the conditions, the better your chances of catching a glimpse of these incredible giants of the New Brunswick wilderness.
