The Semipalmated Sandpiper (Calidris pusilla) was historically one of the most widespread and numerous shorebird species in the Western Hemisphere. In the non-breeding season, they favour sandy beaches and intertidal mudflats. The population was formerly estimated at 3.5 million individuals, but has estimated to have declined at a rate approaching 30% over three generations. Many shorebirds rely on mudflats as stop-over habitat for food resources and protection during their migration, like those in Johnson’s Mills. The Bay of Fundy is one of the largest high-quality staging areas for Semipalmated Sandpipers. During the Bay of Fundys tidal cycle, 35,000 ha of invertebrate-rich mudflats are exposed for feeding and a magnificent display of thousands of feeding shorebirds can be observed.
