This image has been sitting in my archives for a long time. It was always a challenging edit, with so many branches getting in the way, and I was never quite happy with the result. This time, I took a little creative liberty with the background, removing some of the more distracting and unsightly branches.

Anyway, it is what it is. Not every photograph is perfect, but sometimes it's the memory behind the image that matters most.

Wood Duck — one of the most colourful ducks you'll find in North America!

I've always thought the male Wood Duck is one of the most beautiful ducks around. Between those incredible iridescent greens and purples, the deep chestnut breast and those bright red eyes, it's hard to believe all those colours are natural!

One interesting thing about Wood Ducks is that they actually nest in tree cavities, sometimes quite high off the ground. And just a day or so after hatching, the tiny ducklings have to make the leap from their nest to the ground below!

Such a gorgeous bird, and always a pleasure to photograph!

Eastern Screech-Owl — Southern Manitoba.

During my recent trip to Manitoba, I was fortunate enough to photograph this little beauty!

Eastern Screech-Owls are small, secretive owls that are incredibly difficult to spot, thanks to their amazing camouflage. They blend so well into the bark of trees that you could easily walk right past one and never know it was there.

Even when you have a good idea of where to look, actually finding one is another story! It takes patience, a keen eye and a little luck. I was pretty thrilled to finally spot this one!

Hello folks! Sorry I’ve been a little incognito over the past week, but I’ve been in Manitoba visiting family. That said, I always find time to visit my favourite Great Horned Owl family in Winnipeg.

Although the youngsters have long since fledged, I was fortunate enough to find one of them, along with the female.

I’ve felt a little bad about not having much time to keep up with my Lenz Addiction page while I’ve been away, so I did a quick road edit to share with you all.

First up, a Great Horned Owl, taken late at night at ISO 51,000—so definitely more of a show-and-tell photo! This owl was so cool to see and listen to. She was making sounds I’d never heard from a Great Horned before—almost like she was calling with a sore throat, at about half her normal volume. After a while, she flew off to join her mate.
