I’m lucky to live in Alberta. I have grown up loving the animals that I photograph. Bighorn rams and mountain goats are two of my favorite subjects. I was worried I’d never photograph a goat again. Usually when you see them they’re so high that it’s hopeless, but I discovered this week that late October is prime time for them. When it snows they come down into the meadows to feed. So many times when I head up the trail, I have envisioned scenarios where the goats are low on the mountain. That’s exactly what happened over the last two days. I saw five goats in twelve hours. As Pincher Creek Alberta author Andy Russell famously referred to them, it was an honor to spend time with the “Horns in the High Country.”

Hello, the last two days have been insane. I was going to say the trip ended with a bang but it was more like a mushroom cloud going off over the Canadian Rockies. I have a lot of images to share. Thank you

Happy Birthday to my Dad! It was great day in the Canadian Rockies!!! Did you know just like people, rams like to go to the beach with their friends and family? Also, grizzlies love digging for roots in a foot of snow as long as the ground isn’t solid. I’ve been running into the same group of rams for four days now. I’ve found others but they’re smaller, last year I got a huge ram at this time of year but I haven’t been able to locate any real big ones yet and none have come down from altitude. Thanks Everyone!!!

Roche A’ Perdrix. Jasper National Park Alberta Canada. Highway 16 East as you leave towards Hinton Alberta.

This is either Roche Miette or Roche A’ Perdrix in Jasper National Park Alberta. I’m thinking it’s the latter. Roche means rock in French, and Perdrix is French for pheasant and supposedly the mountain takes its name from the distinctive rock fold resembling a pheasant’s tail feathers.

I have issues with many of Alberta’s mountains names. Many like the ones in Kananaskis are named after British naval ships or British Generals from the First World War; there’s also multiple mountains with the same name like Castle or Storm mountain for instance, or like the mountains in Jasper are just plain confusing, and don’t even get me started on Mount Smutwood, one of the most beautiful hikes in Alberta with one of the most hideous names.

I spent a long time trying to get scenic images of these rams but grass, shadows, other sheep, or crooked lower jaws from chewing or eyes closed ruined most of the shots. Still, I have a few decent ones to show for it.

I’m on vacation again in the Canadian Rockies. Dad was supposed to be with me but couldn’t make it and I couldn’t cancel the hotel. I’m going to try to make the most of it. I got some rams for you Dad, nothing huge but always awesome to see.

This calendar was a labour of love. I know the other calendar will outsell this one but this one is special to me. When a place touches you like this, you can't help but want to go back. I know I should maximize my photography by staying Alberta instead of going again on such a costly trip but right now if I could go anywhere again it would be back to Brooks Falls in Katmai. I had about five images I tried to decide upon for the last image but went with a chubby little cub. thank you!
