MY PHOTOGRAPHY

My photographic work has been published locally and internationally in numerous magazines and books, including the world renowned Remembering Wildlife series. My images have been awarded in regional and International competitions.

For the last few years I have worked as a freelance photographer and the head of the stills department for the Natural History Film Unit, where my imag

es are being used in numerous ongoing projects for the National Geographic. In 2017 I received the honor of becoming a brand Ambassador for Sigma South Africa.

I am back in Chobe looking for Malachite kingfishers, so I thought what better time than to re-share this amazing moment. (Yes I know I’m milking the views)

Some info about the moment;

This kingfisher is not and will never be baited. It is completely wild.

It simply got used to our boats over the years which has resulted in it not feeling threatened by us. By respecting its comfort zone over many years it slowly allowed us closer. It even occasionally sat on the boat and used the shadow of the boat to help hunt fish.

One day I tested this theory by outstretching my arm off the side of the boat and waiting very still. It took many attempts and aching shoulders, but eventually worked. Completely ignoring me, and taking advantage of this perfect hunting perch.

I hope you enjoy!

Post #8 - Sigma 70-200 f/2.8
(WHICH IMAGE IS YOUR FAVOURITE?)

The next two posts are images I entered into competitions this year that were taken with a 70-200mm f2.8! Probably the most versatile “wider” wildlife lens. This lens is almost always in my bag and gets extensively used when I want to capture subjects in their environment. The other time I use this lens is from the air. It’s the perfect combination of wide and some zoom capabilities.

Over the next two weeks I’m going to share a selection of images I entered into competitions this year. The theme being around the lenses that were used.

So often I get asked the question; “what’s your favourite lens”. I hope this series will show you that every lens from 24mm to 600mm has competition worthy images in them (if they win that’s another story).

(WHAT IMAGE IS YOUR FAVOURITE?)

The last two competition images post have been shot with the 120-300mm lens. Arguably my favourite zoom lens. I just love the versatility of this lens especially when trying to capture subjects within their environment! Funny enough 5 of the 6 images I will share are from Kenya. I clearly love to shoot Kenya with a wider lens!

While we are on the topic of competitions; I am thrilled to say I have 5 images shortlisted in Africa Geographic top 108 selection. It is a true honour when I see the standard of the 2026 competition. Which image do you think stands the best chance?
