Male Impala bulls fight to prove dominance and win the right to mate with females. During the breeding season, called the rut, bulls lock their curved horns and push, twist, and wrestle each other. The strongest bull usually controls a herd of females and chases away rival males.

These fights are mostly about strength, stamina, and showing off rather than killing. Bulls may roar, snort, and mark territory before fighting. After losing, weaker males usually walk away to avoid serious injury.
