At the top of the Klein Matterhorn / Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, in Zermatt, Switzerland, at an altitude of 3,883 meters, next to the panoramic platform, there is a large wooden crucifix facing one of the most impressive Alpine views in the region. The site is officially presented as the highest mountain station in Europe and offers a panorama of 38 peaks above 4,000 m, 14 glaciers, and 3 countries.
The crucifix has two plaques on its lower part:

The upper one bears a religious text in German:
‘Groß und weit wie Ewigkeiten
Welten sich vor uns ausbreiten,
majestätisch Berge, Höhn.
Gott ist groß und hoch erhoben,
alle Höhen ihn nur loben,
der da ist von Ewigkeit.’

In English:
“Great and vast as eternities,
worlds stretch out before us,
majestic mountains, heights.
God is great and exalted on high,
all heights do nothing but praise Him,
He who is from eternity.”

The lower plaque bears a humanistic message in four languages:
“Mehr Mensch sein.
L’homme d’abord.
Uomo prima di tutto.
Be more human.”

In English, the central idea is: ‘To be more human’ or ‘The human being comes first.’
