23mm or 35mm? Which is better for travel photography?

Personally, I can answer that really quickly or so I thought. I’ve always said that 35mm is my favourite focal length and it’s the one that I really can’t travel without. However, is it really that good for travel photography?

I decided to check the data in Lightroom to see which focal length the data tells me I prefer.

Over the last decade I’ve taken 17,386 photos at 23mm and 14,567 photos at 35mm. I went further and looked at more than 12,000 photos my zoom lenses and found I naturally shoot at 23mm way more often than at 35mm.

The data clearly says 23mm but I would still choose 35mm, every time.

I've spent the last decade shooting with both 23mm and 35mm lenses on Fujifilm so I thought I'd do a little head to head to see which is the best focal length for travel photography.

I also had a deep dive through Lightroom to see whether there was a natural winner - the data says 23mm but if you asked me which one I'd take on a trip, it's the 35mm every time.

AD | A lovely little day out at High Force Waterfall with the girls searching for dinosaurs, watching one of the biggest waterfalls in the country and having a great lunch at the cosy High Force Hotel.

It’s less than an hour from our home, and from Durham, and it feels like a completely different world. We’re definitely going to spend more time in the Durham Dales especially when it looks this beautiful 😍🌳

🎞️ Acros Punch

There’s always space in your collection of Fujifilm recipes for at least one if not two black and white recipes. This, super contrasty, recipe has been my main black and white look since around 2018 and I absolutely love it for cities, landscapes, weddings and more.

The Lanzarote edition of What I See / What I Take might only be my second post in this series but I think it’s already my favourite. Maybe because I remembered to take at least 3 quick behind the scenes photos!

I’ve saved the best for last, you won’t believe it honestly, so make sure you swipe all the way to the end ➡️➡️➡️

I also dug out my beloved Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 and realised it’s still the best lens I’ve ever used. The main images are all captured using my Summer Negative Fujifilm recipe for those interested!
