We met in Kentucky in 2021.
I had just started my undergraduate studies, and he was a French exchange student who was only there for one semester. The very first time I spoke to him, we were waiting for the university shuttle on our first day. I asked him what his major was, and he looked at me with what I can only describe as the classic French glare, replied, “Finance,” and immediately looked away. I remember thinking, Wow, what a rude guy.
Little did I know that he would become the love of my life.
As international students, we spent a lot of time together through orientations, events, and campus activities. Somewhere between those shared moments and countless conversations, a friendship grew. We both liked each other, but neither of us was sure if the feeling was mutual.
Then came our fall break trip.
Standing together at the top of the Empire State Building, watching the sun set over New York City, something changed. The world seemed to slow down for a moment, and we both felt it—the spark we had been dancing around for months.
The next morning, he formally asked me on a date to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
It felt like the beginning of something beautiful.
But just as quickly as our story began, his semester came to an end, and he had to return to France. We decided to try long distance because one thing was certain: neither of us wanted to lose the other.
What followed were five years of video calls, airport reunions, time zone differences, missed hugs, difficult goodbyes, and more obstacles than we ever imagined. There were moments when it was hard, moments when we questioned everything, and moments when life seemed determined to keep us apart.
But through it all, we kept choosing each other.
Five years later, after all the miles, all the waiting, all the challenges, and all the love, we finally made it.
The rude French boy from the shuttle stop became my husband, and the greatest adventure of our lives is only just beginning.
Against all odds, we found our way back to each other.
And now, forever starts here. ❤️
