The other night I was sitting at a table having dessert with a friend. I looked up to see a man staring… I could feel his eyes crawling up my skirt. I quickly crossed my legs. He looked up- a moment of eye contact. Quick and such a normal interaction w a creepy guy.
Once home I spent some time imagining… practicing… what it’d feel like to keep my legs comfortably spread and when he looked up. This time I’d not look away. I’d stare with eyes that said ‘YOU make an adjustment. I am comfortable AND safe with my legs like this.’
R**e culture is perpetuated by women and girls being told to dress to help (most often) adult men control their ‘urges’. Let’s shift to teaching everyone they can wear comfortable clothing without having to anticipate someone else’s reaction. It’s never about ‘what she wore’ or ‘how much she drank’. Stop burdening girls and women and hold perpetrators accountable.

So glad I got the chance to hear speak about his book ‘Stolen Man on Stolen Land’. I knew I had to read this one… read about the Black American experience in Australia. Compare notes of my white American experience. Similarities- everyone asking us what we think of the Orange One and a sense of safety from gun violence. I take sharky waters over mass shootings. Poignant and relevant. Engaging and beautiful. Thank you for sharing your voice, Tyree.

and a chance meet up with my skate friend, Strawberry Short Stacks and her partner. It’s so nice having Americans visit Sydney. I even met a woman who grew up in Maryland. A friend asked if I got her number… sigh. I’m out of practice making new friends. def need more friends who also love
