As we wandered through Australia’s most famous outdoor market, we suddenly heard a powerful operatic voice filling the air. It felt like a performance worthy of Luciano Pavarotti, bringing smiles to everyone who stopped to listen.

Join Diversity Travellers inside the 125-year-old Strand Hotel Yangon, Myanmar's most famous colonial-era hotel, as we experience an authentic Myanmar High Tea featuring traditional Burmese snacks, sweets, salads, and local flavours.

Built in 1901 and located on historic Strand Road, the legendary Strand Hotel has welcomed travellers, diplomats, writers, and explorers for more than a century and remains one of Southeast Asia's most iconic heritage hotels.

Escaping the 36°C Yangon heat, we settle into the elegant Strand Café and choose the Myanmar High Tea instead of the traditional British option. Our culinary journey includes spicy mutton samosas, crispy vegetable tempuras, ginger salad, prawn fritters, sweet semolina cake, black sticky rice with coconut cream, jaggery-filled festival treats, traditional Myanmar red tea, and the elusive tamarind drink that we had been searching for across Yangon.

As darkness falls and the lights illuminate the complex, we explore beautifully decorated shrines, reclining and seated Buddha images, and the peaceful atmosphere created by thousands of worshippers gathering for prayer and reflection.

A special highlight of this visit is witnessing the pagoda under a full moon, creating an unforgettable scene as the golden stupa shines beneath the moonlit sky. Along the way, we learn about the fascinating history of the monument, the incredible quantities of gold used in its construction, and the thousands of diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and other precious stones that decorate its crown.
