Edith Cowan University's brand new Perth city campus has won multiple awards at this week’s West Australian Architecture awards, including prizes for urban design, educational architecture and interior architecture.

A significant Perth CBD landmark building designed for over 10,000 students and staff across 65,000 square metres, ECU City draws design inspiration and insights from the Whadjuk Noongar Elders cultural advisory group and Kurongkurl Katitjin, ECU’s Centre for Indigenous Australian Education and Research.

An enduring connection between land, water and culture is woven into the cultural and architectural design of the campus, from a landscape-inspired passage known as Karak Walk, to foundational cultural narratives known as ‘Life Layers’ reflected throughout the internal spaces, facade and signage.

The building also holds an important civic responsibility, connecting Perth’s main cultural and entertainment precincts, alongside the heart of Perth’s public transport hub. The building is all about seamless connections and access for students and staff, and the transparent nature of the building explicitly places education on show to the public.

Midland Campus, completed in 2019 in Midland, Western Australia.

The building sits on a richly layered site near the confluence of the Helena and Swan rivers on traditional Whadjuk country, which is a place of deep cultural significance. Sitting adjacent to heritage rail workshops, the design responds thoughtfully to that context, using brick and concrete to echo the industrial and historical character of the precinct while creating modern learning environments.
