We hear so much about โfinding ourselves.โ
As though somewhere along the way, the person we really are became lost.
But perhaps we donโt lose ourselves.
Perhaps we simply learn, little by little, to live further away from ourselves.
It can happen so quietly that we barely notice.
We adapt.
We become what is needed.
We learn what keeps the peace.
We take responsibility.
We become partners, mothers, daughters, carers, professionals and friends.
We learn which parts of ourselves are welcomed โ and which parts are easier to keep quiet.
And eventually, our own voice can become harder to hear.
Not because it disappeared.
But because so many other voices became louder.
What should I do?
What will they think?
Will they be disappointed?
Am I being selfish?
What does everyone else need from me?
And somewhere amongst all those questions, we can forget to ask:
What do I need?
What do I feel?
What do I believe?
What gives me life?
What is true for me now?
Perhaps returning to yourself isnโt about reinventing yourself.
It isnโt about becoming a better, more confident or more impressive version of who you are.
Itโs about remembering.
Remembering the intuition you learned to override.
The needs you learned to minimise.
The boundaries you were afraid to create.
The dreams you quietly put aside.
The parts of yourself you adjusted so that you could belong.
Returning to yourself begins with awareness.
Seeing the patterns that have quietly shaped your life.
Understanding where they came from with compassion rather than judgement.
And then realising that something incredibly powerful is available to you:
Choice.
The choice to listen to yourself again.
The choice to honour what you know.
The choice to stop automatically abandoning yourself for the comfort or approval of others.
And the choice to begin asking:
Does this give me life... or take life from me?
Little by little, something begins to change.
You trust yourself more.
You stop needing everyone to understand.
Your needs, intuition, truth and wellbeing begin to matter too.
You discover that you can love deeply without disappearing.
And the woman you thought you needed to find begins to feel strangely familiar.
Because she was never somewhere out there waiting to be discovered.
She was within you all along.
You donโt need to find yourself.
You need to return to yourself. ๐ฟ
