Maybe it’s just where I’m at creatively right now…

But I keep finding myself choosing the blurry ones.

The grainy ones.

The imperfect ones.

The ones where life is happening in between the frames.

Because that’s what life actually feels like, isn’t it?

A little messy.
A little chaotic.
A little imperfect.

I don’t remember the perfectly curated moments.

I remember how something felt.

The butterflies.
The laughter.
The way someone looked at me.
The feeling of being completely wrapped up in a moment and wishing it would last a little longer.

Maybe that’s why I love photos like this.

They don’t feel perfect.

They feel human.

And for me, that’s far more interesting.

I’ve worn a few hats in this lifetime. Especially when it comes to my “job”.

I was a divemaster and spent years diving up and down the east coast of Australia. Naturally I had an underwater camera and was completely obsessed with sharks, turtles and anything that swam past me.

Then I became a paramedic in Sydney.

Looking back, the skills I learnt as an ambo have helped my photography career more than I ever realised.

The ability to read a room.

The ability to stay calm under pressure (even when my head is carrying on like a pork chop 🤣).

The ability to reassure people and help them feel comfortable.

The ability to adapt quickly to whatever is happening around me.

Never in a million years did I think I’d end up owning a photography business.

A successful one.

One that gives me freedom.

One that lets me be creative.

One built around connection, emotion and storytelling.

One where I get to create art for a living.

Honestly, when I zoom out and look at it like that… it’s pretty frikken cool.

The rain was relentless.

The vibes were immaculate.

Not once did these two complain, panic or ask if we should stop.

Instead we turned the city into a playground and created some iconic images.

Proof that perfect weather is highly overrated.

I built this life - it’s by no means been easy.

It’s taken hard work, long hours, many many mistakes…….

It’s taken sacrifice.

It’s taken discipline and commitment.

It’s taken courage.

I’ve learned along the way.

And now here I am, sitting on an island about to board a boat to Hayman Island for an epic destination wedding with my work wife .photography.

This wedding made us cry.

After the ceremony ended and the family photos were done, we took them away for a quiet moment.

Just the two of them.

No guests.
No eyes watching.
No pressure to perform.

Private vows.

They stood by the dam and spoke words that were never meant for anyone else to hear. We stayed back, giving them space… and even from a distance, you could feel the weight of what was being said.

Tears running down our faces behind the cameras because the moment felt so real, so honest, so deeply theirs.

The best thing about private vows…

You don’t have to rush through your words at the altar.
You don’t have to hold back emotion because people are watching.
You just get to be fully present with the person you chose.
